The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College softball team tested its mettle on Wednesday as the Lazers dropped a pair two second-ranked Herkimer County Community College at the Softball Complex.
With the losses, the Lazers, who entered the night ranked in the NJCAA's top-ten (No. 9) for the first time since the late 1980s, moved their season mark to 6-6 overall while the Generals improve to 6-7.
Game One: Herkimer 10, Onondaga 9The Generals were able to score two runs in the top of the first after belting two hits including an RBI-double that reached the left-center fence before Onondaga could stop the bleeding and escape the inning without any further damage.
The lead wouldn't last for long though as Onondaga would put up four runs in the second inning with the big blow coming when
Sarah Bregg launched a three-run homerun that cleared the left field fence to put the Lazers up by one run. Onondaga would add its final run of the frame on an RBI-single by
Chantel Hammond that staked the home team to a 4-2 lead.
Onondaga would add another run in the third inning but the Generals responded with five runs in the top of the fourth inning on the strength of five hits including three extra base knocks to take a two-run lead, 7-5.
Herkimer would take a 10-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning and were within one out of a win before the Lazers' bats came to life. Bregg would get two back for Onondaga after blasting her second triple of the game to score
Whitney Smith and
Jess Rodriguez. Bregg would score as the next hitter,
Samantha Moon, laced an RBI-single up the middle and later advanced to second after Hammond connected with a hit to the left side, but the Lazers were unable to push the tying run across the plate as Herkimer held on for the one-run win, 10-9.
Elizabeth Jackson was saddled with the loss after going five and a third innings with 10 runs (eight earned) on 13 hits.
Game Two: Herkimer 14, Onondaga 6 (Six Innings)Much like in the first game, Herkimer took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after two costly errors by Onondaga allowed the inning to continue.
The home team would claim the lead in the bottom of the first with three runs as

Sammi Loveless each picking up an RBI in the process.
Herkimer would open things up in the top of the second inning with eight runs on three hits and four walks including a grand slam.
Onondaga would chip away in the second after four straight singles including RBI knocks by Hammond and Mon cut the deficit to 10-6.
