Warren Throws Complete-Game Shutout as Lazers Split with Ithaca JV

The Onondaga Community College baseball team dropped its opening game against Ithaca College JV, 5-0, before rebounding to take the nightcap, 8-0, on Tuesday at the Baseball Complex.

With the split, Onondaga see its season record move to 3-7 overall.

Game One: Ithaca (JV) 5, Onondaga 0

The Bombers would cross home plate first in the second inning after an Onondaga error set Ithaca up with runners on the corners and no outs.  The Bombers would capitalize on the Lazers' miscue with an RBI-groundout to take a 1-0 lead before Onondaga could get out of the jam.

The visitors would threaten again in the top of the third.  With the bases loaded, Ithaca pushed its second run across courtesy of another RBI-groundout, however, Onondaga would escape any further trouble as Nate Budge flashed the leather and threw across the diamond to end the inning.

Ithaca would score two more in the fifth and one in the seventh and limited the Lazers to only four hits to earn a game one victory, 5-0.

Alexander Way took the loss for the Lazers are going five innings and allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits.

Brandon Kapcinski, Ricky Ortiz, Austin Bush and John Larca each singled in the loss.

Game Two: Ithaca (JV) 0, Onondaga 8

After a scoreless top of the first, Onondaga would put up a three spot in the home half of the inning on three hits including a run-scoring triple from Ortiz.  Larca would knock in Ortiz with an RBI-single to left field and eventually came around to score on an RBI-groundout by Kapcinski before Ithaca could get off the field.

Onondaga would add two more runs in the second inning as Drew Mallinder led with a deep triple and would later score with Paul Fitzgibbons being credited with the RBI.  The Lazers were at it again when Eric Thompson scored from second base on a shallow single to right field by Avery Brooks to give the home team a five run lead, 5-0.

Neither team would score until the bottom of the sixth when Ortiz walked and moved around the horn after a passed ball and a stolen base.  Ortiz wouldn't remain at third for long as Larca lofted a deep sacrifice fly to plate Ortiz and Onondaga's sixth run of the contest.

Onondaga would plate two more runs in the sixth after an Ithaca error allowed Zack Ortiz to advance home.  Mallinder would later score the Lazers' final run after advancing two bases on a wild pitch.

Chad Warren was dealing for the Lazers.  The Canastota native picked up his first collegiate win after throwing a complete-game shutout.  Warren allowed only two hits while punching out five.

The Lazers and Bombers will battle again at 2 p.m. on Thursday in another doubleheader at the Baseball Complex.
