Softball Erupts for 31 Runs in Sweep of Fulton-Montgomery

The Onondaga Community College softball team combined to score 31 runs while holding Fulton-Montgomery Community College to only six hits as the Lazers swept the raiders in their home-opener on Sunday at the Softball Complex.

The Lazers improve to 6-4 on the season with the wins while Fulton-Montgomery falls to 0-2.

Game One: Fulton-Montgomery 0, Onondaga 13 (five innings)

After posting two scoreless innings, Onondaga would get on the board in the third inning in a big way beginning with a solo shot from Sarah Bregg to give the Lazers a 1-0 lead.  The next hitter, Samantha Moon, would draw a base on balls and quickly advanced around the bases after a single from Chantel Hammond and a stolen base.  Brittney Sears would step to the plate and give the home team a 3-0 advantage with a two-run double that plated both Moon and Hammond.   The scoring continued for the Lazers when Lea Newman lifted the inning's second two-run double that scored Kyra Hunsinger and Brittney Sears.

Onondaga would match its scoring feat in the fourth inning with five more runs after producing six hits including two triples and a double to take a 10-0 lead.

Elizabeth Jackson pitched a complete-game shutout after hurling five innings of work.  Jackson allowed only two hits and recorded eight strikeouts.

Game Two: Fulton-Montgomery 0, Onondaga 18 (five innings)

The Lazers jumped all over the Raiders in the first inning after scoring eight runs on five hits including back-to-back doubles by Elizabeth Riegler and Morgan Neadom.

Onondaga would add a run to its total in the second inning before adding three more runs in the bottom of the third on the strength of a three-run home run by Bregg, which was her second long ball of the afternoon.

The home team would score five more runs in the bottom of the fourth after clubbing six singles as the Lazers earned their second mercy rule win of the day.

Bregg was 2-for-2 in the contest with a game-high four RBI and four runs scored.  Moon went 1-for-3 with three runs batted in and Riegler also found a grove at the dish going 3-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Sears went four innings and allowed only two hits.  She recorded seven strikeouts and walked two.

As a team, the Lazers connected on 16 hits including four extra base knocks.

The Lazers will look to carry their momentum when they host nationally-ranked Herkimer County Community College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in a doubleheader at the Softball Complex.  Herkimer enters the game as the second-ranked team in the nation.
