Nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College men's lacrosse earned its third win this season over a top-ten program on Saturday as the No. 1 Lazers defeated fourth-ranked Genesee Community College, 16-8, in Batavia. The win marked the 93rd consecutive win for Onondaga and moved the Lazers to within four wins of the all-time NJCAA record for consecutive wins across all sports (97).
With the win, the top-ranked Lazers remain unbeaten at 6-0 while the Cougars, who are ranked fourth in the latest NJCAA national standings, fall to 3-3 overall.
The Lazers came out firing and would score five goals in the first quarter before Genesee was able to notch its first goal of the afternoon.
The host Cougars would pull to within two goals, 5-3, as the second quarter wore on, but the Lazers would answer with one of their signature runs after scoring three goals to end the stanza to take an 8-3 lead at intermission.
The Lazers' offense would add to its lead as the second half got underway with two more goals before the Cougars could find the back of the net. The deficit would grow to 12-6 in the fourth and would balloon to an eight-goal advantage for Onondaga after outscoring Genesee 4-2 in the final frame.
Kyle Killen posted five points including a career-high four goals while
Nicholas Garbarino added four points of his own on two goals and a pair of assists.
Sean Ohlhaver finished with a career-best four goals and
Brine Rice notched four points on a goal and a game-high three assists.
Max Bosworth scored twice for Onondaga while
Seth Leonard has two assists in the win and
Adam Bomberry and
Nick Sawyer each recorded one goal.
Holden McDonald recorded double-digit saves for second consecutive game after finishing with 17 saves en route to his fifth win of the season. The Toronto native has recorded 40 saves in his last two contests and now ranks ninth in the nation in total saves.
The Lazers dominated at X with
Doug Jamieson and
Sam Watts combining to win 16 and five face-offs, respectively.
The Lazers will look to move one step closer to the record at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday when they visit Jefferson Community College in Watertown.
