Softball Wraps up Play at Snowbird Classic with Split

The Onondaga Community College softball team wrapped up its eight-game schedule at the Snowbird Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Thursday with another split as the Lazers beat Finger Lakes, 7-0, before falling to Rochester Community and Technical College in extra innings, 6-5.

The Lazers (4-4) will return north and will take on Genesee Community College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday in Batavia.

Game One: Finger Lakes 0, Onondaga 7

Sarah Bregg would lead off the bottom of the first with a single and quickly moved to second base after swiping her team-leading sixth stolen base of the season.  Chantel Hammond would plate the first run of the morning with an RBI-triple and would score the Lazers' second run after a Finger Lakes' error allowed her to advance home.

Onondaga would add to its lead in the third frame when Bregg smacked a run-scoring double that drove in Elizabeth Riegler who had reached on a fielder's choice.

After a scoreless third inning, the Lazers would gain four more runs in the bottom of the fourth after connecting on five successive singles with Samantha Moon, Hammond and Sammi Loveless each picking up an RBI in the inning.

In all, Onondaga connected on 13 hits including two for extra bases.  Bregg continued her hot hitting going 3-for-4 with a double, one run batted in and two runs scored.

Elizabeth Jackson (2-2) was dealing from the circle and had a perfect game into the fourth inning before surrendering a hit. She tossed a complete-game shutout after hurling seven scoreless innings and allowed only three hits while punching out eight in the win.

Game Two: Onondaga 5, Rochester Tech. 6

Entering the seventh inning trailing 5-4 and down to its last three outs, Onondaga would rally to tie the game at five runs apiece.  The Lazers would load the bases after clubbing three straight singles to lead off the inning.  Whitney Smith would step to the plate and drive in the tying run with a fielder's choice, but that was the only run Onondaga would muster as the Yellowjackets would record three straight outs to leave the bases juiced.

Earlier in the contest, Onondaga would hold a 4-0 lead after plating a run in each of the first two innings followed by two more in the top of the third, but the Yellowjackets would answer with a run in the third inning before putting up four more in the fifth.

Loveless was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the Lazers with a run scored and an RBI-double while Brittney Sears finished 3-for-3 with a double.
