Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Earns Split on Day Three of Snowbird Classic

The Onondaga Community College softball team earned another split on the third day of the Snowbird Classic.  Onondaga's late-inning rally against Rochester Community and Technical College fell short, 8-6, but the Lazers bounced back to take a 13-1 five-inning decision against Lackawanna College.

With the split, the Lazers' season mark levels at 3-3.

Game One: Onondaga 6, Rochester Community and Technical 8

After taking an early 1-0 lead, the Lazers would give up eight runs over the first three innings on the strength of eight hits.

Trailing 8-2 in the top of the seventh inning, the Lazers would go to work.  Onondaga would lead off the inning with two quick groundouts to the right side before connecting on back-to-back singles by Haley Albertson and Jess Rodriguez to set the Lazers up with two on and two out.  Sarah Bregg would do the rest, smashing a three-run moon shot to make it 8-5 in favor of the Yellowjackets.  The very next batter, Chantel Hammond, would follow suit, launching a solo shot of her own to make it a two-score game, but that was as close as the Lazers would come as Rochester Community and Technical escaped with the win.

Bregg was 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored while Hammond was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Elizabeth Jackson took the circle for Onondaga and surrendered eight runs (six earned) in six innings of work.  Jackson gave up eight hits and recorded five outs via strikes.

Game Two: Onondaga 13, Lackawanna 1

The Lazers carried over their momentum in the second game, blasting 13 hits that lead to a season-high 13 runs.

Coach Nichols squad used their feet to manufacture two first inning runs when Bregg and Hammond combined to steal three bases, staking the Lazers to a 2-0 lead.

Onondaga would tally two more runs in the very next inning when Samantha Moon drove in Elizabeth Riegler and Bregg, who had each singled in the frame, to make it 4-0 in favor of the Lazers.

The Lazers would do the majority of the damage in the third and fourth innings after recording nine runs on eight hits with the big blow coming off the bat of Bregg in the form of a two-run triple.

Brittney Sears and Hailie Lehman stifled Lackawanna all game as the tandem allowed only one run on four hits the entire game.

Riegler collected three hits in four at-bats to lead Onondaga while Lea Newman, Samantha Moon, Sears and Bregg each accounted for two hits.

The Lazers will wrap up their spring break trip on Thursday with a pair of games.  Onondaga will take on Mid-State Athletic Conference rival, Finger Lakes Community College at 9:30 a.m. before doing battle once again with Rochester Community and Technical College at 11:30 a.m.
