The Onondaga Community College baseball team had its opening day spoiled on Monday as the Lazers surrendered five runs over the final two innings to fall to Patrick Henry Community College, 7-6, in a nine inning affair in Martinsville, VA.
The Lazers would strike first, plating two runs in the top of first after
John Larca would come around to score on an infield error and
Brandon Kapcinski laced an RBI-single to score
Avery Brooks who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning.
After giving one back in the bottom of the first, the Lazers would get two more runs in the third.
Ricky Ortiz started the two-run inning with a walk and quickly advanced to second after a
Dylan Nardocci single. The next batter, Kapcinski, laced another RBI-single to right field to score Ortiz before
Nate Budge looped a run-scoring single to drive in Nardocci.
Onondaga scored a run in the sixth and eighth innings on RBI-singles from Larca and
Justin Mathers, respectively, before the Patriots overcame a 5-run deficit to plate the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Reynaldo Hernandez got the start for the Lazers but did not factor into the decision after going seven strong innings and allowing only two runs. The lefthander gave up nine hits and struck out five.
Luke Drancsak took the loss after giving up one run in nearly two innings of relief.
Onondaga (0-1) will continue its spring break trip when it returns to the diamond at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, N.C. before
