The Onondaga Community College softball team opened up its 2015 campaign in thrilling fashion after hitting a walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand nationally-ranked Brookdale Community College its first loss of the season. The Lazers would fall to Louisburg Community College in the afternoon matchup.
With the split, Onondaga moves to 1-1 on the young season.
Game One: Onondaga 5, Brookdale, 4 After surrendering three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Lazers rebounded in the home-half, plating two runs of their own after
Samantha Moon knocked in
Sarah Bregg with an RBI triple. Moon would later come around to score Onondaga's second run after breaking for home when Brookdale had
Chantel Hammond in a run down.
The Jersey Blues would score again in the fourth inning before
Morgan Neadom boomed a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at four runs apiece.
Leading off the seventh,
Kyra Hunsinger would single up the middle and advanced into scoring position after an infield error. The Baldwinsville native would move to third after a wild pitch and came around to score the game-winning run on a walk-off RBI single by Bregg to lift the Lazers to a win over third-ranked Brookdale.
Elizabeth Jackson earned her first-career win in the circle after hurling a complete-game. The Baldwinsville native allowed eight hits and two earned runs while recording three strikeouts.
Game Two: Louisburg, 4, Onondaga, 3 As it had in the first game, Onondaga would find itself in a two-run hole after the first inning, but the Lazers would come back to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
After
Sammi Loveless drew a four-pitch walk, the next batter, Neadom, would reach base after being plugged by the pitcher. Both would come around to score after
Elizabeth Riegler lined a two-run single before coming around to score later in the inning on an error.
The lead wouldn't last an inning, however, as Louisberg came back to score two more runs in the fifth en route to the 4-3 win.
The Lazers will return to the field tomorrow for another pair of games. Onondaga will take on Delaware Technical Community College at 11:30 a.m. before closing out the afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against Southern Maryland.
