The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College men's lacrosse team won its 91st consecutive game on Saturday after holding the visiting Harford Community College Fighting Owls to only two goals in a 23-2 win at David W. Murphy Field.
With the win, the Lazers, who are the nation's top-ranked team, improve to 4-0, while the Owls slide to 0-3 on the season. The Lazers are now six wins away from tying the all-time National Junior College Athletic Association winning streak of 97 games set by the Herkimer County Community College men's soccer team from 1994-97.
It was a closely contested first quarter by Onondaga's standards as the Lazers were held to only four scores in the first 15 minutes of play with
Brine Rice,
Tom Pritchard,
Adam Bomberry and
Nicholas Garbarino all netting goals.
The action picked up in the second quarter, however, with the Lazers controlling the tempo throughout. Onondaga would score all six of the stanza's goals including a man-up tally from
Kyle Killen to hold a 10-1 lead at intermission.
Coming out of the break, the Lazers continued to steamroll the Fighting Owls' defense with four more goals capped by an unassisted score from
Seth Leonard before Harford would score its final goal of the contest at the 2:36 mark of the third quarter to make it 14-2 in favor of the home team.
Onondaga's offense would capitalize on six Harford turnovers and five penalties in a big way over the final 15 minutes of play scoring nine times, three of which were on man-up opportunities. Â
The Lazers spread the ball around the entire game with 16 players recording at least one point in the win. Rice, the reigning NJCAA Region III Male Athlete of the Week, finished with five points on four goals and one assist while Garbarino tallied four points to go along with three groundballs. Killen added five points of his own on two goals and three assists and Bomberry notched three points and eight groundballs.
Defensively, the Lazers continued their dominant ways and have now outscored their opponents 108-9 in four games to start the season. Â Â
Tyson Bell led all players with 11 groundballs and eight caused turnovers.Â
Chandler Allen forced three turnovers and
Justin Hussey caused two.
Sam Watts was nearly perfect from the faceoff X for Onondaga, winning 11-of-12 chances and scooping up six groundballs.Â
Doug Jamieson,
Zach Lohman and
Seth DeLisle combined to win 10 faceoffs.
Holden MacDonald got his third win of the season in net for the Lazers and made four saves in 45 minutes of action.
Onondaga will embark on a four-game road trip beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday when it faces its toughest challenge to date against nationally-ranked CCBC-Essex in Rosedale, MD. Â Â Â Â
