The top-ranked Onondaga Community College men's lacrosse team will open its title defense at 1 p.m. on Friday when it takes on nationally-ranked SUNY Delhi in Binghamton at the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex before returning home on Wednesday to duke it out with Finger Lakes Community College on the turf at David W. Murphy Field.
Onondaga is coming off yet another undefeated season that resulted in its sixth consecutive national championship and eighth in the last nine years after dispatching of Nassau Community College, 12-7, in the 2014 NJCAA title game. Entering the 2015 campaign, the Lazers currently own the longest winning streak in collegiate lacrosse history with 87 straight victories.
Despite losing its top four scorers from last season along with the NJCAA Attackman and Midfielder of the Year and the NJCAA Goalie of the Year, the No. 1 Lazers still boast a wealth of talent on both ends of the field.Â
On offensive, attackman
Nicholas Garbarino returns for his sophomore season after ranking fifth on the team last season with 58 total points including 45 goals and 13 assists. Â Joining Garbarino on attack are
Seth Leonard and
Tom Pritchard who tallied 37 and 23 points, respectively for head coach
Chuck Wilbur's squad.
The Lazers boast a talented midfield corps as well led by returning sophomore
Parrish Young who tallied 26 points last season with 22 goals and four helpers.Â
Adam Bomberry,
Mac Morgan should also have an impact while
Chris Sargent and
Dalton Wenzel are expected to contribute.
Onondaga returns two of the best defensemen in the nation this season as sophomores
Tyson Bell and
Oakley Thomas will look to repeat the successes of their freshman seasons after being named First-Team All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association. Bell was named the nation's top defenseman.Â
The pair started every game for Onondaga and were part of a defensive front that led the nation in goals against average (4.41) and goals surrendered (75).
Dan Scanlon,
Anthony Zangari and
Collin Twombly are also expected to play significant minutes on defense for the Lazers this season.
The Lazers are looking strong at long stick midfielder as well with
Logan Ball and
Chandler Allen returning for the second season.
Despite losing the nation's top goalminder and All-American in
Warren Hill, Onondaga is excited about the potential of its incoming crop of goalies including freshmen
Holden McDonald,
Jack Sweeney and
Tyrrell Halliman along with sophomore
Sean Rhodes.
This year's company of incoming players will be relied upon heavily as well in the Lazers run for a seventh straight title.Â
Brine Rice,
Sean Lattimore and
Matt Bennett will see time at attack while
Nick Sawyer,
Kyle Killen,
Jesse Ondrako,
Sam Watts and
Tom Koster are expected to have big role at midfield.
