The nationally-ranked and top-seeded Onondaga Community College women's basketball team overcame a slow start to earn an 80-43 win over the fourth-seeded Corning Community College Red Barons in the semifinal round of the Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship on Friday in Allyn Hall Gymnasium.
The win marked the 15th in a row for the No. 3 Lazers (25-4) who will look to secure their sixth consecutive conference crown at 1 p.m. on Saturday against the No. 2 seeded Jefferson Community College Cannoneers in a rematch of last year's title game. Jefferson defeated the No. 3 seeded SUNY Broome Hornets, 46-45, in the night's other semifinal game.
The Lazers struggled to find any cohesion in the early goings of the first half, shooting a combined 3-for-12 (.250) while turning the ball over six times before finding their groove.
After back-to-back transition baskets, the Red Barons were within two points, but that was as close as they would come. Onondaga shook off any early struggles, closing out the first half on a 30-7 run highlighted by a 17-0 spurt featuring five points from
Autumn Gavin. Â
Both teams would exchange baskets throughout much of the second half, however, as it had in the first half, Onondaga would close out the half on a run, this time outscoring the Red Barons 19-8 over the final eight minutes of play to earn a right to defend its conference title.
Four players scored double-figures for Onondaga led by
Brittany Anderson's 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor including four treys.Â
Melissa Bakowski netted 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds while
Samantha Roberts posted 12 points of her own along with six assists.Â
Emiko Powell finished with 10 points and
Kumba Marong collected a game-high 15 rebounds in only 12 minutes of playing time.
