Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Finger Lakes Spoils Sophomore Day for Men's Basketball

The Onondaga Community College men's basketball team held nationally-ranked Finger Lakes Community College well below its season average, but came up short on Saturday as the Lazers fell to the No. 9 Lakers, 86-64, in a Mid-State Athletic Conference game in Allyn Hall.  Prior to the game, Onondaga honored its nine sophomores for their contributions to the program over the last two seasons.

With the loss, Onondaga dips to 15-12 and 7-4 in the conference standings while Finger Lakes moves to 21-4 overall and 10-2 against MSAC opponents.

Finger Lakes started the game strong, outscoring Onondaga 8-3 before a 12-3 run capped by a 3-pointer from Joseph Piazza in the corner gave the Lazers a four-point lead, 15-11, with seven minutes gone by in the first stanza.

Both teams would exchange baskets over the next several minutes, however, Onondaga would go cold from the field allowing the visiting Lakers to open up a 16-point advantage after outscoring the Lazers 20-5 in a six minute span leading to a 46-34 score at the break.

Finger Lakes would build its lead to 20 points in only three minutes of the second half courtesy of an 8-0 run, but the Lazers would answer with a 10-3 burst of their own to cut the deficit to 13.  That was as close as Onondaga would come, however, as Finger Lakes controlled the pace throughout the remainder of the half.

The Lakers proceeded to outscore Onondaga 15-3 over the next six minutes and would continue to score in transition leading to an 86-64 win.

Michael Scott led the Lazers with 22 points and 11 rebounds while sophomore Lloyd Parkmond finished with 11 points and 11 boards.  Piazza had eight points and Kyle Kline added five assists.

The Lazers will close out their regular season at 7:30 on Tuesday when the travel to Cayuga Community College before meeting Finger Lakes once again in the semifinals of the Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship on Friday in Corning.
