Led by freshman
Kumba Marong's career-high 21 rebounds, the nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's basketball team dominated the glass on Saturday as the Lazers defeated Cayuga Community College 84-53 in Mid-State Athletic Conference action in the SRC Arena and Events Center.
With the win, No. 4 Onondaga has now won eight straight games, moving to 18-4 overall and 6-0 against MSAC opponents. Cayuga drops to 7-12 overall and 1-5 in conference play with the loss.
The Lazers had their way on the glass against the Spartans, out-rebounding Cayuga 62-35 on the day. Onondaga was also able to create second chances on 37 offensive rebounds, 18 of which came from Marong.
Up 33-20 with just over eight minutes left in the first half, Onondaga sophomore
Autumn Gavin knocked down a 3-pointer on a feed from
Emiko Powell. The bucket would kick-start a 23-10 run for the Lazers to end the half giving them a 26 point advantage.
Onondaga did the majority of its scoring in the first half coming away with 56 points at the break including 15 points from
Brittany Anderson and 14 points from
Alisia Griffin. Both Anderson and Griffin would go on to finish the game with 18 points apiece.
In the second half, the Lazers would build their lead as high as 37 points when Marong and Powell pulled in consecutive offensive rebounds that led to a made layup from Marong, putting the Lazers up 82-45 with five minutes remaining. The bucket gave Marong 14 points for the game, marking her eighth double- double of the season.
Onondaga would never hold a lead fewer than 24 points in the second half and eventually went on to defeat the Spartans by 31 points. Â
Freshman
Samantha Roberts played a key role in the game for the Lazers as she contributed 10 points, seven assists and a game-high five steals. On the season, Roberts is averaging a team-leading 6.4 assists per game.
Onondaga will attempt to push their winning streak to nine games at 12 p.m. on Saturday when it takes on Corning Community College in an MSAC road contest.
