The Onondaga Community College men's basketball team led throughout on Saturday as the Lazers defeated Central New York rival Cayuga Community College, 82-70, in a Mid-State Athletic Conference showdown in the SRC Arena and Events Center.
With the win, Onondaga climbs back above the .500 line at 11-10 and moves to 4-2 in MSAC play while the Spartans drop to 2-17 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
The Lazers wasted little time taking the lead, scoring just 26 seconds into the game when
Trevor Smith beat his defender and drove to the hole.
The basketball ignited a 15-5 run that lasted nearly eight minutes of play capped by a
Kyle Kline jumper from the elbow.
After exchanging possessions, the Spartans would cut the lead to seven points, 26-19, before
Kameron DiSanto sent the crowd into a frenzy after driving the baseline and dunking over a Cayuga defender, earning an and-one opportunity in the process.
The Lazers would capitalize on the swing in momentum with a 17-2 run to make it 42-21 but Cayuga would close out the half on an 11-3 run to send both teams into the break with Onondaga leading 45-32.
Cayuga continued to play hard and eventually cut the Lazers' lead down to five points with back-to-back 3-pointers, but another old-fashioned 3-point play by DiSanto would give Onondaga a 10-point lead and some breathing room.
The Spartans would notch two more baskets in the paint, but the Lazers held their ground closing out the game with six consecutive free throws to earn the 82-70 win.
Lloyd Parkmond scored 15 points to go along with seven rebounds, five steals and four assists while Kline added 15 points of his own including three from distance. DiSanto finished with 13 points and five boards and
Joseph Piazza contributed 11 points in the win.
The Lazers will return to the hardwood at 6 p.m. when it hosts Johnson College in a non-regional matchup in Allyn Hall.
