The Onondaga Community College women's basketball team pushed its current winning streak to six games on Monday after taking overcoming a late deficit to take down fifth-ranked Mohawk Valley Community College 75-69 in overtime at the SRC Arena and Events Center.
With the win, the Lazers improve to 16-4 on the season while the Hawks had their 13-game winning streak snapped and drop to 15-3 on the year.
The two teams battled through a back-and-forth first half that saw Mohawk Valley take a 29-27 lead into halftime despite sophomore
Brittany Anderson netting 13 points before the intermission.
Anderson was an offensive force throughout the entire contest and would end up posting a career-high 33 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the floor.
With just over 17 minutes left in the second half, Onondaga would find itself trailing the Hawks, 32-29, when Anderson hit one of her four 3-pointers in the contest to spark a 10-4 run for the home team to give Onondaga a 39-36 advantage with just over 14 minutes left in regulation.
Over the course of the next 11 minutes of play, both teams would take turns swapping the lead with neither team holding a larger advantage than Mohawk Valley's four point edge, 58-54, with 3:06 remaining.
After two key free throws from Anderson to cut the lead to two, freshman
Kumba Marong came up big for the Lazers when she converted on a layup off an
Alisia Griffin pass to tie the game at 58 points apiece with just over two minutes showing on the clock.
Marong would add a jumper with 22 seconds left in regulation to put Onondaga up 60-58. The Hawks were not ready to quit, however, as Stevie Ray converted on a layup with 4 seconds left for the visitors, sending the game to overtime.
Down 66-65 with 2:22 remaining in the extra period, Onondaga starting point-guard
Samantha Roberts would find Griffin down low for a layup to give the Lazers the lead, igniting a 10-4 Onondaga run including buckets from Marong, Anderson and
Melissa Bakowski. The Lazers held a seven-point lead, the largest by either team in the contest, after two free throws from Roberts with 13 seconds left and held on to win 75-69 in overtime.
Marong was big for Onondaga on both ends of the floor as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season tallying 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds while also contributing two blocks and a steal.
Roberts and Griffin also made key contributions for the Lazers in more ways than one. Roberts finished with eight points, five assists and two steals while Griffin had five points, eight rebounds and three steals.
The Lazers once again showed off their defensively ability by totaling 11 steals and four blocks in the contest.
Onondaga and Mohawk Valley were knotted up eight different times throughout the contest while the game also saw eight different lead changes throughout regulation and overtime.
The Lazers will look to extend their winning streak to seven games at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they return to Mid-State Athletic Conference action against Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua.
