The Onondaga Community College women's basketball team overcame an early deficit on Saturday before cruising to its first win in Mid-State Athletic Conference play with a 62-49 win over visiting Corning Community College in Allyn Hall.
With the win, Onondaga improves to 12-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference standings while Corning dips to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in MSAC play.
It would take the mighty Lazers' offense nearly six minutes to score its first basket as the opening minutes were controlled by the Red Barons, leading to a 9-0 advantage for the visitors.Â
Emiko Powell would turn defense into offense after blocking a Corning jumper and taking it coast-to-coast to halt the Lazers' scoring drought at 14:13, but the Red Barons would answer back with two quick jumpers in the paint to stretch its lead back to nine points, 15-6.
Onondaga would find a grove midway through the opening stanza, using a 19-4 run highlighted by three 3-pointers to open up its largest lead of the game, 25-19.
The Red Barons would keep it close as the half wore on, however, drilling a pair from distance to send both teams into the locker rooms with Onondaga leading 30-26.
Onondaga would come out of the locker room a different team. The Lazers wasted no time creating distance using a 15-2 run capped by consecutive 3-pointers from
Brittany Anderson to lead Corning 45-30.
The Red Barons would score two quick baskets, but it was too little too late as the Lazers used another run, this time scoring 10 of the game's next 12 points to put the game out of reach for the visitors.
Kumba Marong posted her second straight double-double and third this season with a team-high 13 points and 12 rebounds while Anderson connected on four from beyond the arc to finish with 12 points.Â
Samantha Roberts added 12 points of her own along with seven assists, six rebounds and a pair of steals.Â
Alisia Griffin chipped in with seven points and eight boards and Powell contributed seven points in the win. Â
The Lazers will continue conference play at 6 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to Binghamton to duel the SUNY Broome Hornets.
