The Onondaga Community College men's basketball team fell 82-69 to visiting Corning Community College on Saturday in Allyn Hall in its first Mid-State Athletic Conference contest of the season.
Onondaga drops to 7-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss, while Corning improves to 10-5 and 2-0 in MSAC competition.
Trailing 67-48 late in the second half, the Lazers began to rally when
Kameron DiSanto converted on a layup with just over five minutes left in the game. This began a 19-8 Onondaga run that made the score 75-67 with 1:32 left in the contest.
During the late-game run, the Lazers were led by sophomore
Colyn Hanley on both ends of the floor as he contributed two of his game-high four blocks during the three and a half minute stretch while also scoring the bucket that cut the lead to eight points. Hanley was one of four Lazers to finish with nine points on the day.
Despite closing the gap late, Onondaga would run out of time and ultimately fall short on their comeback bid. The Red Barons would hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 1:23 of the game leading to their 13-point victory.
In the first half, four straight points by
Michael Scott followed by a 3-pointer from
Trayshaun Hymes kept Onondaga within one point of Corning at 20-19 with 8:14 remaining in the half. Scott would go on to lead the Lazers in scoring with 10 points marking the sophomore's fifth time recording double figure scoring in a game this season. He also picked up six rebounds.
Hymes converted on a season-high three 3-point field goals during the game while also finishing with nine points. Along with his six points,
Zachary Perry played a key role on the glass for the Lazers, tallying a game-high and career-high 11 rebounds with six coming on the offensive end.
Onondaga resumes their conference play at 8 p.m. on Tuesday when they hit the road to take on the SUNY Broome Hornets in Binghamton.
