Women's Basketball Falls in Battle of Nationally-Ranked Teams

The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's basketball team couldn't overcome a 42-point performance from North Country Community College's Simone Roberts as the Lazers suffered their second consecutive loss after falling to the nationally-ranked Saints, 82-65, Saturday afternoon in Allyn Hall Gymnasium.

Onondaga, which ranked third in the latest NJCAA national poll, falls to 8-2 with the setback while the No. 7 Saints remain unbeaten at 8-0.

Emiko Powell, Brittany Anderson and Alisia Griffin each finished with 14 points while Samantha Roberts tallied 13 points, four rebounds and a team-high five assists.  Melissa Bakowski added four points, seven boards and four blocks and Kumba Marong pulled down nine rebounds including four on the offensive end.
The Lazers trailed throughout much of the contest, but would cut the deficit to four points, 36-32, heading into the intermission break.

In the second half, North Country would stretch its lead to 12 points after draining eight unanswered points to claim a 45-33 lead.

Onondaga would battle back, however, when Anderson connected on three 3-pointers from the far corner en route to a 14-2 Lazers' run, erasing North Country's lead in the process as the game was tied at 49 points apiece with 11:33 remaining in the game.

After swapping baskets over the next two minutes, the Saints would explode on the offensive end of the court; burying four straight treys in less than two minutes to give North Country an 11-point lead.

The Lazers would play efficiently down the stretch, coming to within four points after a pair of free-throws by Powell, but that was as close as they would come as the Saints scored their final 15 points from the charity stripe to earn the win.

The Lazers will look to build on Saturday's effort at 12 p.m. on Sunday when they host Clinton Community College in a Region III contest.
