Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nationally-Ranked Lazers Overtake Genesee to Remain Perfect

The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's basketball team overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the visiting Genesee Community College Cougars, 77-65, on Thursday night in Allyn Hall Gymnasium.

With the win, remains unbeaten at 3-0 while the Cougars dip to 1-3 overall.

The No. 4 Lazers had the hot hand early and led throughout much of the first half, but the Cougars would close out the opening stanza strong using a 6-2 run to take a two-point lead, 34-32, into the locker room at halftime.

Genesee would carry the momentum into the second half, building a 42-38 lead, but Onondaga's offense would wake up around the 15 minute mark of the half after an old-fashioned 3-point play by Alisia Griffin cut the Cougars' lead to one.

After exchanging empty possessions, Griffin would give Onondaga a temporary lead with a layup before the Cougars snatched it back with a bucket in the paint of their own.
Less than a minute late, the Lazers notched four unanswered points on baskets from Melissa Bakowski and Griffin, respectively, and never looked back.

Genesee had its best chance to reclaim the lead with 11:14 showing on the clock after burying a jumper from the right side, but the Cougars couldn't stop Onondaga on the defensive end as freshman Kumba Marong corralled an offensive rebound and laid it in sparking an 8-1 run capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Brittany Anderson to give the Lazers a 60-51 advantage.

The Cougars would come to within seven points, but that was as close as they would get as Onondaga closed out the game on a 5-0 run to earn the 77-65 win.

Five Players reached double-figures in scoring for Onondaga led by Emiko Powell with 16 points in the win along with seven rebounds and five assists.  Anderson also notched 16 points after sinking four from distance.  Samantha Roberts had 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor.  The North-Syracuse native also had four helpers and five steals for the Lazers while Griffin chipped in with 14 points and seven boards.   Bakowski had a strong game, producing 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Lazers will return to the fold at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will face SUNY Adirondack in Queensbury.
