Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late rally comes up short as Lazer men fall to SUNY Delhi

Delhi, NY - SUNY Delhi placed 5 players in double figures and connected on 14 three-point goals in defeating Onondaga on Saturday afternoon.  The Broncos built a 14-point advantage in the first half but the Lazers rallied to within 67-66 with just under 6 minutes to go.  Onondaga was unable to take the lead, however, as the Broncos held off the Lazers to secure the win.

The game was tightly contested in the early going, before a 6-0 Onondaga run capped by back to back Lloyd Parkmond (Rome Free Academy) baskets gave the Lazers a 14-8 lead.  Delhi responded with an 11-2 run of their own, however, and took a 19-16 lead with 8:59 left in the opening half.

A Zachary Perry (Gilboa-Conesville) layup and a pair of free throws from Thomas Towner (Lansing) sandwiched a Delhi free throw, and pulled the Lazers even again at 20-20, with 8:04 to go in the half.  With the game still tied at 25, three straight Onondaga turnovers fueled a 10-0 Bronco run.  Delhi then built the lead to their biggest of the day, 44-30, with 2:18 to go in the opening session.  The Lazers then closed the half with a 7-0 run of their own, with the final 5 coming from Towner, to narrow the deficit to 44-37 at the break.

Onondaga continued to chip away at the start of the second half, and when Michael Scott (Chittenango) scored with 17:44 remaining, the Lazers were within 2, 45-43.  Delhi's Marvillo Berroa answered with back to back three-pointers, however, and the Broncos regained some breathing space.  Onondaga continued to hang around, however, and when Towner converted 1 of 2 free throws, the Lazers were within 1 at 67-66 with 5:51 to go.  Delhi regained control down the stretch, however, and pulled away late for the win.

Scott paced Onondaga with a game high 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Towner added 18, and Parkmond reached double figures with 11.  Trayshaun Hymes (Utica T.R. Proctor) handed out 8 assists for the Lazers.  Matthew Banton topped 5 double figure scorers with 18 points, while Berroa and Naim Thomas added 17 points each.

The Lazers next play at Columbia-Greene Community College Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm..
