Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nationally-ranked Women's basketball Wins Classic for Seventh Consecutive Season

The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's basketball team secured its seventh consecutive championship at the eighth annual Onondaga Community College Classic after defeating Northampton Community College, 76-61, in the championship game held in the SRC Arena & Events Center.

In the consolation, SUNY Sullivan came out on top of Delaware County Community College.

With the win, the No. 4 Lazers move to 2-0 overall and will return to the hardwood at 6 p.m. on Thursday when they face Genesee Community College in Allyn Hall.

After exchanging baskets throughout the game's opening minutes, Onondaga would begin to pull away thanks to a 15-3 run capped by a 3-pointer by Brittany Anderson to make it 33-17.

Northampton would answer with a run of its own, scoring nine of the next 11 points stretching back to the final minutes of the first stanza to cut the home team's lead to nine points, but seven quick points by the Lazers would provide some breathing room as Onondaga led 42-26 with 17:39 left in the contest.

After back-to-back baskets by the Spartans, Onondaga would once again extend its lead.  Melissa Bakowski scored seven of the Lazers nine consecutive points to make it a 23-point Lazers' lead, however, the Spartans began to catch fire from the floor, producing a 19-5 run that would last over six minutes of play including five consecutive field goals to erase Onondaga's lead to nine points, 60-51, forcing head coach Mike Wheeler to call a timeout to try and regroup.

The break in action seemed to creat a shift in the game's momentum as the Lazers would control the ball throughout the final five minutes of action en route to the 76-51 win.

Alisia Griffin was named the Classic's Most Outstanding Player after scoring 21 points in the championship on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor to go along with six rebounds, four blocks and a game-high seven steals.  Samantha Roberts was also named to the All-Tournament Team after contributing nine points, five rebounds and six assists in the win.  Anderson was also named All-Tournament as the sophomore produced 19 points, three steals and three boards for Onondaga.  Bakowski chipped in with 12 points in all along with a game-high 13 rebounds while freshman Kumba Marong tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.

Shantyce Brodhead (SUNY Sullivan), Tiffany Govan (Delaware County) and Dominque Oyeniyi (Northampton) were also named to the Classic's All-Tournament Team.
