The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven consecutive games on Sunday as the Lazers downed Fulton-Montgomery Community College, 67-48, in a rematch of last season's Region III Championship.
With the win, Onondaga, ranked No. 4 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll, improves to 7-0 while the Raiders drop to 3-3 on the season.
Â
After exchanging baskets throughout much of the first half, the Lazers would break a 12-12 tie, using a 16-4 run that stretched nearly nine minutes of play to claim a 28-16 lead.
The Raiders would keep it close, however, cutting the deficit to eight points after an old-fashioned three-point play, but Onondaga would close out the half with back-to-back layups to hold a 35-24 edge at intermission. Â
Onondaga continued its assault on the offensive end of the court in the second half, extending its lead to as many as 19 points after
Autumn Gavin drained a deep 3-pointer from the wing to make it 56-37.
The Raiders would get two back at the charity stripe, but Onondaga's lead was too much as the Lazers earned the 19-point win.
Four Players reached double figures in scoring for Onondaga led by
Alisia Griffin's 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. The Geneva native also tallied seven rebounds and four blocked shots.Â
Brittany Anderson sank three from distance to finish with 12 points and four assists while
Melissa Bakowski added nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds along with a career-best five blocks in the win.Â
Kumba Marong chipped in 11 points and Gavin had 10 points.Â
Samantha Roberts got the offense going with six assists and seven points. Â
The Lazers will return to the court at 6 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Buffalo to take on Erie Community College.
