Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lazers Earn Sixth Win in a Row with a 59-Point Win over Schenectady

The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's basketball team overpowered Schenectady County Community College on Thursday night as the Lazers scored a season-high 101points and extended their winning streak to six games with a 101-42 win over the Royals in Allyn Hall.

With the win, the No. 4 Lazers improve to 6-0 on the season while Schenectady falls to 0-2 overall.

Onondaga wasted little time separating itself from the Royals with a 7-0 run to open the game before Schenectady could stop the bleeding with a lay-up, however, the Lazers had different ideas, scoring 20 of the next 24 points to take a 27-6 lead with 9:35 remaining in the first stanza.

As the half continued, Schenectady had no answer for the Lazers' fast-paced offensive tempo.  Onondaga would pad its lead with a 25-9 run to close out the first half with a 52-17 tilt.

The Lazers continued to create separation in the second half as the home team opened the final frame with a 14-0 run to take a commanding 66-17 lead.

The Royals continued to battle, but the Lazers would open up a 67-point lead capped by a Kumba Marong jumper to give the Lazers a 101-34 advantage.

Schenectady County would find its rhythm late, scoring eight unanswered points to close out the game, but it was too little, too late as the final horn sounded earning the Lazers a 101-42 victory.

Six players scored in double-figures for the Lazers, led by Brittany Anderson's 19 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field.  Alisia Griffin and Sabina Kadic each notched 14 points in the win while Emiko Powell chipped in with 13 points and four assists.  Melissa Bakowski added 12 points and five boards and Samantha Roberts tallied 12 points and five assists for Onondaga.  Marong narrowly missed recording a double-double after registering nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

As a team, the Lazers had 21 assists on 43 made field goals while holding the Royals to 26 percent shooting (15-for-57) from the field.  Onondaga's defense was on display as it forced the visitors into 29 turnovers.

Onondaga will return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when it hosts Fulton-Montgomery Community College in a rematch of last season's Region III Championship.  The Lazers held on to defeat the Raiders 79-67 to earn a spot in the NJCAA National Championship Tournament.
