Nationally-Ranked Lazers Dominate in Season-Opener

The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College Lazers stepped on the accelerator and never looked back on Saturday, downing Delaware County Community College, 84-33, to advance to the championship game of the Onondaga Community College Classic for the seventh consecutive season.

The No. 4 Lazers controlled the pace from the opening possession, jumping out to an 18-point lead before the Phantoms could stop the bleeding with a layup to make it 20-4.

After extending its lead to 27-6 after back-to-back baskets by Samantha Roberts and Autumn Gavin, the Lazers began to pull away, scoring 14 unanswered points to hold a commanding 35-point lead en route to a 46-10 score at intermission.

The Lazers' defense was firing on all cylinders in the first stanza, holding Delaware County to three field goals while forcing the visiting Phantoms into 22 turnovers.

Onondaga would continue to apply the pressure in the second half, scoring 17 of the next 18 points to take a 60-14 lead with 16:29 left on the clock.

Autumn Gavin would give the Lazers their largest lead of the night when she converted a jumper to put Onondaga up by 55 before a 3-pointer from Delaware would end a scoreless drought that lasted nearly four minutes.

Five players totaled double figures in scoring for Onondaga led by Roberts' 20 points to go along with a game-high nine assists.  Melissa Bakowski tallied 18 points in the win while Alisia Griffin and Gavin scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Emiko Powell collected 10 points while freshman center Kumba Marong posted a game-high 18 rebounds to go along with eight points.  Brittany Anderson filled the box score with seven rebounds, six steals, two assist and blocked shot.

As a team, the Lazers collected 26 steals and accounted for 23 assists on 34 made field goals.

Onondaga will return to action at high noon on Sunday when it plays Northampton in the championship game in the SRC Arena & Events Center.  The Spartans were able to pull away late to hand nationally-ranked SUNY Sullivan its first loss of the season.  Dating back to 2008, Onondaga has won the Onondaga Classic six consecutive seasons.
