Volleyball Falls to Jefferson in MSAC Championship

The top-seeded Onondaga Community College volleyball team came up short on Saturday as the Lazers fell in straight-sets to fourth-seeded Jefferson Community College in a semifinal match of the 2014 Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) Championship.  In the title game, Jefferson would go on to defeat No. 2 Finger Lakes Community College in straight sets to win the conference crown.

After falling in the first set, 25-9, the Lazers began to gain some momentum in the second set.

Onondaga would climb out of a three-point hole as the Lazers scored six out of the next seven points to take a 10-8 lead, forcing Jefferson to call a timeout regroup.

As the set wore on, Onondaga would trail 22-18, but as they had earlier in the frame, the Lazers would rebound with four straight points to even the contest, however, Jefferson would notch three of the final four points en route to the win and a two-set lead.

In what turned out to be the final set, the Cannoneers were staked to an early lead and never looked back. The Lazers would rally, scoring six of seven points when trailing 20-8 to close the gap to a seven points, but that was as close as they would come. Jefferson would hold on to take the third and decisive set 25-16.

Onondaga received strong performances from Melissa Krak and Leslie Santos throughout the match. Krak tallied a team-leading eight kills to go along with six digs while Santos led the way with 15 digs. Sydney Burritt recorded 20 assists in her first career start at setter. Isabella Winklestine had seven kills and Allison Massara turned in a strong defensive effort with 13 digs.

The Lazers, now 23-14 on the season, will return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday as Onondaga travels to Binghamton to face SUNY Broome in a sub-regional contest.  The winner will advance to play top-seeded Monroe Community College in Niagara.
