Volleyball Earns Straight-Set Win on Sophomore Night

The Onondaga Community College volleyball team closed out its regular season with a straight-set win over Elmira College's junior varsity squad on Wednesday night as the Lazers celebrated Sophomore Night in Allyn Hall Gymnasium.

Prior to the start of the game, Onondaga honored its seven sophomores including Jessica Cost, Melissa Krak, Allison Massara, Rachel Zoanetti, Najah Amica, Abbey Townley and Meaghan O'Toole.

After scoring 10 of the final 13 points in the opening set, Onondaga would assert itself in the second and third frames.

The Lazers jumped out to a 10-4 lead and never looked back; scoring 17 of the next 18 points en route to a 25-6 win and a 2-0 lead.  Sydney Burritt served four aces in that span.

The third and deciding set was much of the same as the Lazers were staked to an early lead courtesy of three aces in a row from Krak.  A 14-1 run would give the Lazers all the room they would need as Massara clubbed the game-winning kill on a feed from Krak.

Massara tied her career-high and led all players with 12 kills while Krak, who played setter for the first time in her collegiate career, tallied a game-best 23 assists.  Isabella Winklestine had six kills to go along with three digs and Leslie Santos collected 12 digs in the win.

As a team, Onondaga recorded 13 aces and set a new season-high with a .302 hitting percentage.

Onondaga, now 23-13 on the season, will look to capture the Mid-State Athletic Conference crown beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday as the top-seeded Lazers host Jefferson Community College in the 2014 MSAC Championship in Allyn Hall.
