The Onondaga Community College women's volleyball team dropped both of its matches on Friday as the Lazers were one of nine teams that competed in the annual Cara Bryant Memorial Volleyball Tournament in Allyn Hall.
With the losses, Onondaga drops to 18-10 on the season while its two opponents, SUNY Broome and nationally-ranked Northampton, improve to 12-10 and 28-0, respectively.
MATCH ONE: Onondaga: 1, SUNY Broome: 2After holding a five point lead in the opening set, the Lazers would surrender seven of the next nine points as the Hornets stormed back to tie the frame at 14-14 before taking a two-point lead of their own.
Onondaga would regain its momentum as the set wore on, scoring four consecutive points en route to a 25-22 win.
In the second set, SUNY Broome would be the aggressor after jumping out to 13-9 lead. Onondaga would score three straight points capped by a big kill from
Melissa Krak, but the Hornets would notch five points in a row to earn a 25-19 win.
In the third and deciding set, both teams battled back-and-forth and were tied, 16-16, before SUNY Broome nailed down the final two points to take the set and the match.
Krak had a strong match offensively, leading all players with nine kills. The sophomore hitter also recorded 13 digs.Â
Jessica Cost notched a double-double with 22 assists and 15 digs while
Leslie Santos and
Allison Massara each tallied 13 kills, respectively.Â
Sydney Burritt had four kills and a pair of blocks for Onondaga.
MATCH TWO: Onondaga: 0, Northampton: 2In the nightcap, the Lazers looked to hand nationally-ranked Northampton Community College its first loss of the season, but it was not to be as the No. 6 Spartans cruised to a straight-set win, 25-13, 25-16.
Krak led Onondaga with three kills and five digs. Â
Isabella Winklestine had two kills and a pair of blocks and Cost tallied five helpers, two services aces and a pair of kills.
The Lazers will continue play at the Cara Bryant Memorial Volleyball Tournament beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday and will host Finger Lakes Community College followed by SUNY-Delhi.
