Coach Mike Wheeler served as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Onondaga Community College from 2001-2020. Before coming to Onondaga, he coached at the high school varsity level for six years and won two sectional titles. In his tenure, he has built the Onondaga Community College Women’s Basketball Program into a National Powerhouse. The Lazers have been ranked in the top-ten in the country for eleven years and three times being named the number one team in the country in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
Since restarting the program, Coach Wheeler has compiled an overall record of 509-128, posting a winning record in each of his 18 seasons as Head Coach. He has led the Lazers to nine straight Mid-State Athletic Conference Tournament Championships and won 106 consecutive conference games from February 11, 2017 to January 7, 2019.
The Lazers appeared in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament five times under Wheeler’s leadership:
2009 - Lost in the Final Four and finished fifth in country.
2010 - Finished 35-1 and suffered their only loss of the season in the National Championship game.
2012 - Lost in the Final Four and finished fifth.
2014 - Lost in the Elite Eight, 59-58, to the eventual National Champion, and finished fourth overall.
2018 - Lost in the Elite Eight.
Wheeler has been named Mid-State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year seven times (2006-07, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2011-12, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2018-19), NJCAA Region III Coach of the Year four times (2008-09, 2009-10, 2011-12, 2015-16) and National District A Coach of the Year four times (2008-09, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2013-14).
Mike Wheeler is still currently employed at Onondaga as an Enrollment Associate.
