Baseball Splits with Jefferson in Home Opener

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga Baseball opened up at home with Jefferson Community College on Sunday afternoon.

The Lazers were up on the board first after starting pitcher, Sophomore Jesse DeMaintenon (Canastota, NY / Canastota HS) shut out the Cannoneers in the top of the 1st with three strikeouts. Lead off Sophomore Mike Ferranti (Endicott, NY / Union-Endicott HS) scored in the bottom on a hit by pitch and advanced on two Jefferson errors.

DeMaintenon sat down three straight Canonneer batters in the top of the 2nd recording three more strikeouts before Jack Bushnell (Fairport, NY / Fairport HS) recorded an RBI to tack on another run in the bottom of the inning.

Jefferson put themselves on the board in the 3rd after an RBI single. But OCC responded on an RBI single for Ryan Campbell (Syracuse, NY / Westhill HS) to score Carlos Jara (West Chester, PA / West Chester East HS) and lead 3-1.

Jefferson manufactured their second run in the top of th 5th on an RBI single before tying it up 3-3 with a deep RBI double to left field, then taking the lead on error with two outs. Another Lazer error to follow ended DeMaintenon's day on the bump and bringing in Freshman Luke Winchell (Verona, NY / Vernon Verona Sherill HS) to close out the top of the 5th inning.

Still trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th for the Lazers last at bat, Luis Suarez (Syracuse, NY / West Genesee HS) reached base from a walk followed by a near game ending popup for OCC allowed Campbell to reach first for two runners on with two outs, bringing in a new Jefferson pitcher. A fly out ended the game for the Lazers taking the 4-3 loss.

Chase Koenig (Oriskany, NY / Oriskany HS) got the start for the Lazers in game 2. Jefferson loaded up the bases with no outs to which the Lazers handled with a double play and a strikeout but not without one run scoring. A Luke Pickett (Aurora, OH / Westhill HS) double in the bottom of the 1st put two in scoring position for OCC followed by a Ryan Campbell sacrifice fly to tie it 1-1.

Jefferson manufactured two quick runs on several OCC errors with no outs in the top of the 2nd. OCC responded by loading the bases with one out followed by a 2 RBI-double from Anthony Sawanec (Westmoreland, NY / Westmoreland HS) and an RBI from Jara to lead 4-3.

Kyle Brown (Brewerton, NY / Paul V. Moore HS) knocked in Campbell for an RBI single in the bottom of the 3rd. A Jefferson pitching change came after OCC loaded the bases bringing Sawanec to the plate to drive in three for an RBI triple. An RBI single from Jara to cap off the 4th gave OCC a 9-3 lead.

A Bushnell RBI single gave OCC a 10-3 lead in the bottom of the 4th after Suarez reached on a hit by pitch.

An OCC pitching change began the top of the 5th bringing in Anderson Roden (Liverpool, NY / Liverpool HS) into the game. The Cannoneers manufactured 3 runs before bringing in the third OCC pitcher of the inning, Nate Kroll (Getsville, NY / Williamsville North HS). A walk drove in a run with bases loaded to end the top of the inning 10-7.

With no further runs scored, the Lazers secured the win in game 2, 10-7.
