Lazers Host Thunderwolves on Sophomore Day


Syracuse, NY - Onondaga Baseball hosted SUNY Niagara on Sunday. The Lazers recognized 11 sophomores playing in their final regular season home contest:

Matt Krul started on the bump for the Lazers in game 1. The Thunderwolves manufactured 3 runs on 4 hits in the top of the inning. Mike Ferranti led off with a double looking to respond. Ferranti was pushed over to third on a ground ball hit by Luis Suarez. Colin White drew a walk putting runners on first and third. An error caused by a ground ball hit by Ryan Campbell brought Ferranti home, with a 3-1 score to end the 1st.

Catcher Luis Suarez hosed a runner stealing second to start the top of the 2nd after a walk. Krul recorded his first strikeout of the day for out number two. A groundout ended the top of the 2nd with the Thunderwolves still leading 3-1. Kevin Stewart led off with a double to start the bottom of the inning, advancing to third on a Jeff Ralabate single. Three outs to follow stranded two Lazer runners, still trailing 3-1.

After a single and a walk to start the top of the 3rd, Krul recorded another strikeout for out number one. An RBI single through the infield knocked in run number four. With bases loaded, a Krul strikeout gave the Lazers a chance to limit the damage. Another Krul strikeout stranded the three runners, allowing just one run in the 3rd. Suarez drew a walk in the bottom of the 3rd, but no runs scored, still trailing 4-1.

A walk after the Thunderwolves loaded up the bases forced in a run in the top of the 4th. An RBI-single and sacrifice fly to follow gave Niagara a 7-1 lead. The Lazers were scoreless in the bottom of the 4th.

Sam Gallager came to the mound in the 5th. Giving up no runs, the Lazers still trailed 7-1 headed to the bottom of the inning. Three straight groundouts quickly got to the top of the 6th.

Gavin Leahy made a a diving play to prevent the lead off batter from reaching in the top of the inning. Two more groundouts gave the Thunderwolves their second straight scoreless inning. The Lazers struggled to produce baserunners, still trailing 7-1 headed to the 7th.

The Lazers defended another scoreless inning for the Thunderwolves, headed to the bottom of the 7th trailing 7-1. Three straight outs ended game 1 with a 7-1 final score.

Connor Eastwood got the start in game 2. The Thunderwolves manufactured 3 runs on 3 hits in the 1st. Colin White smoked a deep fly ball to left field for a double in the bottom of the 1st for the lone hit in the bottom of the inning. 

The Lazer defense kept the Thunderwolves scoreless in the top of the 2nd. A quick three outs in the bottom of the inning kept the score 3-0.

With bases loaded and two outs in the top of the 3rd, Jeff Ralabate caught a deep fly ball in danger of extending the Thunderwolves' lead, remaining 3-0. Donny Jackson walk, Sawanec single After a Donny Jackson walk and Anthony Sawanec single, a passed ball put the two Lazers in scoring position with two outs. The Lazers stranded the two runners ending the inning with a fly out, still trailing 3-0.

Eastwood drew a quick three outs to start the 4th inning, with Niagara still scoreless since the 1st inning. The bottom of the inning was the same with the Lazers putting no runners on, sitting still at 3-0.

After a walk to start the top of the 5th, Ryan Campbell took over for the Lazers on the mound, kicking it off with a strikeout for out number one. An error allowed one run to score for the first time since the 1st inning. With 4 hits in the inning, the Thunderwolves put up 5 runs, leading 8-0. Joe Adamo reached third in the bottom of the 5th after a hit and two stolen bases with two outs. A strikeout to end the inning stranded him, scoreless in the 5th and trailing 8-0.

Anderson Roden came to the mound in the 6th inning for the Lazers. Roden ended the inning with a strikeout with runners on, still trailing 8-0. Mason Phillips singled through the infield with two outs for the Lazers' one hit of the inning.

The Lazers allowed two hits in the top of the 7th, but made plays to hold the Thunderwolves scoreless in the top of the 7th and stranding two baserunners. strikeout, fc, runners interference The bottom of the 7th for the Lazers included no hits and no runs, taking the loss in game 2.

Onondaga travels to Jamestown Community College this Thursday, May 1st with a 2pm start.
