Lazers Drop Two Against Genesee at Home

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga Baseball hosted the Genesee Cougars on Tuesday afternoon at the OCC Baseball Complex.

Jesse DeMaintenon got the start on the mound for the Lazers starting the day with 55 career strikeouts. The Cougars led off with a double to start game 1 and proceeded to produce baserunners off three hits and five walks and allowing Genesee to manufacture 6 runs before Sam Gallager entered the game in the top of the 1st with two outs. A pickle allowed the Cougar's 7th run to come in before Gallager got a ground out to end the 30-minute top of the inning. Colin White got things started in the bottom of the inning with a line drive single with two outs. A flyout stranded White on base with no runs scored.

Patrick Stafford came to the mound for OCC's third pitcher of the day in the top of the 2nd. A diving catch from Nick Perrotta prevented the first batter of the inning reaching base on a diving catch in left field. Two groundouts to follow ended the inning quickly for the Lazers to potentially put up some runs. A quick three outs in the bottom of the inning still had the Lazers trailing 7-0.

A lead off double, a walk, and bunt loaded up the bases for the Cougars with one out. A sacrifice fly scored a run on out number two of the inning followed by a popout for Genesee to lead 8-0. The Lazers continued to struggle to find baserunners in the bottom of the 3rd, still scoreless.

The Cougars led off with back to back hits in the top of the 4th putting runners in scoring position. With two outs, a 2 RBI-single gave the Cougars a 10-0 lead. Luis Suarez hosed a Cougar runner stealing second to end the inning. Ryan Campbell smoked one down the right field line for a double with two outs and was left stranded at the end of the 4th.

The Lazers grabbed three quick outs in the top of the 5th, trailing 10-0 in danger of ending the game in 5 innings due to mercy rule. An error allowed Carter King on base, but was thrown out advancing to second on the overthrow for out number two. A strikeout to finish ended game 1 in 5 innings with the Lazers falling 10-0.

Connor Eastwood got the start in game 2 for the Lazers. The Cougars loaded up the bases in the 1st on three walks and scored their first run on a fielder's choice. A hit batter forced in another run for the Cougars to lead 2-0 in the top of the inning. Colin White singled to left field with two outs for the lone hit of the inning.

After a lead off single followed by a walk, Sam Gallager returned back to the mound, grabbing the lead runner on a bunt for out number one. Grabbing out number two on a strikeout, a wild pitch scored another Cougar run with two outs. A fly ball lost in the sun for an error scored two more runs followed by an RBI single in the top of the 2nd for the Cougars to lead 6-0. Carlos Jara led off reaching first after taking a pitch to the back followed by Kevin Stewart drawing a walk. Cooper Brogan moved them over on a groundout to put two runners in scoring position. A fly out stranded them both holding the Lazers still scoreless.

An RBI double and RBI triple scored two for the Cougars in the top of the 3rd to lead 8-0. A quick three in the bottom of the inning kept the Lazers still scoreless on the day. 

Jace Egenhauser came to the mound in the top of the 4th. Egenhauser shut out the Cougars grabbing two groundouts and recording a strikeout. Two walks and a Ferranti single loaded up the bases in the bottom of the 4th, bringing up Cooper Brogan who singled through the infield bringing in The Lazers' first 2 runs of the day.

A quick three outs in the top of the 5th kept the score 8-2 before the Lazers' next at bats. Joe Adamo drew a walk to start the bottom of the inning, but three outs to follow stranded him on base.

After two Lazer errors in the top of the 6th, the Cougars had runners in scoring position. A double play to end the inning left two Cougars on base. The Cougars had a double play of their own in the bottom of the inning after Carter King reached on a hit by pitch and Kevin Stewart singled with the score still 8-2 headed to the 7th.

Sophomore Jason Carrasco came to the mound in the 7th. The Cougars loaded up the bases, manufacturing 3 runs on multiple walks and a sacrifice fly, leading 11-2. The Lazers failed to score any runs in the bottom of the 7th, taking the 11-2 loss in game 2.

Onondaga travels to the 37-0 Niagara Thunderwolves this Thursday, April 24th at 2pm.
