Lazers Move to 10-6 with Wins Over Broome

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga Baseball hosted SUNY Broome in a conference doubleheader starting at 2pm. The Lazers took two wins over the Hornets, moving to 8-2 in MSAC play.

Patrick Stafford started on the bump for the Lazers in game 1. The Hornets lead off with base hit to right field followed by a double to score the lead off batter. The Hornets took a 2-0 lead off a sacrifice fly with just one out. Stafford grabbed a strikeout of out number two. A single to right and a walk led to a mound visit for Stafford. Grabbing a groundout to end the top of the 1st, the Lazers trailed 2-0. Ferranti led off finding a way on base off a Broome error. Luis Suarez poked one through the infield to move Ferranti over to third. Colin White cleared the bases with a homerun over the left field fence to lead 3-2 with no outs. Another Broome error allowed Ryan Campbell to reach first base. Broome scraped together two outs but the Lazers weren't done as Dante Santos knocked in Ryan Campbell on a single to center.

A quick three for the Lazers to start the 2nd got to their next at bats where Colin White knocked in two more on a single up the middle to lead 6-2 headed to the 3rd.

The Hornets scored a run on a base hit in the top of the 3rd, cutting Onondaga's lead to three. Stafford grabbed a strikeout but allowed another Broome run on a wild pitch before another strikeout to end the top of the inning. A quick bottom of the inning with no runs or hits led to the top of the 4th with Onondaga leading 6-4.

Jace Egenhauser took over the mound in the top of the 4th for the Lazers grabbing a quick groundout, popout, and line out. Ferranti led off beating out a throw to first and stealing second to get it started. Ferranti was stranded on second with no more hits in the inning and still leading 6-4 headed into the 5th. 

Egenhauser grabbed a quick groundout and two flyouts in the top of the 5th. Carlos Jara single to left field to start the bottom of the inning. Santos followed with a single for himself. Jack Bushnell to load up the bases for Cooper Brogan, where he smoked a deep fly ball for a 3-run RBI. Luis Suarez followed up with a 2-run RBI to right field and lead 11-4, bringing in a new pitcher. Colin White smoked the first pitch off the new pitcher's hands to knock in a another run. Ryan Campbell scored Colin White on a single to left, ending the inning leading 13-4.

Egenhauser shut out the Hornets in the 6th with two fly outs and a strikeout. The Lazers went scoreless in the bottom of the 6th, still leading by 9. 

Shutting out the Hornets in the top of the 7th, the Lazers took the win in game 1, 13-4. Colin White had a career high six RBIs.

Jack Bushnell came to the mound to start game 2. Bushnell walked the first two Hornet batters, forcing a mound visit from Coach Piraino to refocus. An error allowed another Hornet runner, loading up the bases with no outs. Dan Gilkey grabbed himself a double play at third base on a ground ball, but allowing the first Hornet run to cross the plate. With two down, the Hornets put up another run on an RBI single, ending the top of the first 2-0. Ferranti reached on a Hornet error to start the bottom of the inning for OCC followed by a base hit single from Luis Suarez. Colin White kept his RBI count up after knocking in 2 runs on a double to right center and tying it up. 

Bushnell responded in the top of the 2nd with two ground outs and fly out, holding the Hornets scoreless. Nick Perrotta led off, reaching base on a walk. Jeff Ralabate pushed Perrotta over to third to potentially take the lead. Dan Gilkey worked a walk loading up the bases for Ferranti who took one in the back, scoring the Lazers third run.

The Hornets led off the 3rd with a base hit. With the tying run headed home on a passed ball, Catcher Kevin Stewart hustled to the ball to flip to Bushnell catching the runner stealing and hanging onto their lead. Stewart went to work at his at bat earning a lead off single in the bottom of the 3rd. A Perrotta walk brought a mound visit for Broome. Another walk off the new pitcher loaded up the bases. Broome scraped together two outs to leave three Onondaga runners on base in the bottom of the third, but still leading 3-2.

The Hornets tied it up at 3-3 in the top of the 4th on a double to score a runner who reached on a walk and bringing Onondaga's first pitching change, Carter Stewart. Stewart grabbed the Lazers first out with the go ahead run advancing to third, then scoring on a ground out RBI to take the lead, 4-3. Ferranti led off the bottom of the 4th with a hard hit ball to left field. Suarez tied it up quick scoring Ferranti on an RBI double to left field. Colin White hbp Kevin Stewart put down a successful sacrifice bunt moving over Suarez and White into scoring position. Carlos Jara had the RBI to score Suarez, putting the Lazers ahead 5-4. OCC tacked on an insurance run on a Broome error and the RBI credited to Perrotta. Jeff Ralabate scored Perrotta for the Lazers 7th run on a single to left field.

Carter Stewart kicked off the top of the 5th with a strikeout. Kevin Stewart caught the Broome runner stealing into second after reaching base on a single. The Lazers stranded a runner in the top of the inning, still leading 7-4. A quick 1-2-3 inning has the Lazers still leading by 3 headed into the 6th inning. 

A failed sacrifice bunt attempt earned the Lazers their first out of the inning after a runner reached on an error. Another error loaded up the bases for the Hornets, but was handled by Carter Stewart with a big time strikeout for two outs and a groundout to end the inning unscathed. A misread fly ball to deep center field got Colin White to third to lead off the inning. Jara smoked a ground ball to score White for an 8-4 lead in the bottom of the 6th. 

Jason Carrasco entered the game in the 7th to close it out for the Lazers in game 2, grabbing a quick fly out for out number one. walk, base hit, ground out, runners in scoring position with 2 outs, ground out.

Colin White had two more RBIs in game 2, alongside Carlos Jara with a pair for himself. Carter Stewart took the win on the mound.

The Lazers take on Genesee Community College on the road tomorrow, March 27th at 2pm.
