Lazers Drop Two to Cayuga

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga Baseball hosted the conference opponent, Cayuga Community College with a quick turnaround after Tuesday's doubleheader with Monroe. The Lazers dropped games 1 and 2 moving to 4-6 on the season.

Patrick Stafford started on the mound for the Onondaga  in game 1, grabbing a quick three outs to get to the Lazers' first at bats. The Spartans grabbed a quick three outs as well, both scoreless headed into the 2nd inning.

The Lazers got out of the 2nd inning quick after a strikeout and double play. The Lazers strung together their first two runs in the bottom of the 2nd, taking a 2-0 lead.

Cayuga scored their first run in the 3rd on an RBI single after a walk. The Lazers avoided further damage defending contact made by Cayuga. A quick 3 outs for Cayuga had them still trailing by just a run headed into the 4th.

The Lazers kicked off the 4th with an RBI single to score their third run, extending their lead to 3-1 headed into the 5th.

Stafford added on another strikeout to start the 5th inning. Cayuga knocked a high fly ball hitting the wall to put runners in second and third with the tying run at the plate. A Lazer error scored Cayuga's 2nd run and bringing a first and third situation with 1 out for the Lazers. A walk would load up the bases, still with 1 out and bringing in Connor Eastwood to the mound. A sac fly got the Lazers' their second out but damage was done with the Spartans tying it up at 3-3. Eastwood fights off Cayuga's potential lead getting a ground ball for our number three.

Cayuga manufactured a run in the top of the 6th, taking the lead on an RBI after a successful sac bunt. The Lazers couldn't produce a baserunner in the bottom of the inning, now trailing headed into the 7th. A call not in Onondaga's favor put Cayuga runners on first and third with 1 out. A p passed ball strike scored a Cayuga run, 5-3. Eastwood kept his composure striking out the following two Spartan batters, ending the half inning and giving the Lazers the task of having to score 2 to tie, 3 to win.

A Cayuga error to kick off the bottom of the 7th put a Lazer runner on base, bringing the tying run to the plate, Joe Adamo, who moved over pinch runner, Dante Santos over to second on a base hit single, giving Mike Ferranti a chance for Onondaga to walk off in game 1. Cayuga secured their first out on a full count strikeout, bringing .375 Suarez to the plate. Suarez forced another Cayuga error, juicing up the bases for Ryan Campbell. Campbell hit into a fielder's choice, for Cayuga's second out, but a runner scores. A dropped fly ball, but ruled an out, ended the game, 5-4 with a questionable ending.

Noah Umstead went 2-3 from the plate in game 1.

Carter Stewart started game 2 on the mound. Cayuga put two on the board quick, with 2 base hits in the first inning. The Lazers worked a few walks to get runners on 2nd and 3rd and a chance to put one on for themselves, but left both runners on headed to the 2nd, trailing 2-0.

The Spartans juiced up the bases with one out for the Lazers before a base hit scored 2. They strung together 2 more in the inning to lead 6-0 in the 2nd. A quick bottom of the inning for the Lazers included a base hit from Kevin Stewart, but still remained scoreless.

Cayuga continued to score each inning, adding another in the 3rd before Antonio Terrazas came in relief for Onondaga. Cayuga cleared the bases on a 2-run homer on the first batter and first pitch for Terrazas. The hits kept coming for the Spartans ending the 3rd inning, 11-0. Onondaga continued to struggle stringing together baserunners, still scoreless in the bottom of the 3rd.

Cayuga strung together 3 more in the top of the 4th, leading 14-0. The Lazers started the inning with back to back base hits for Anthony Sawanec and Dan Gilkey. Sawanec made it home on a wild pitch to score OCC's first run. Donny Jackson took one to the head to give the Lazers another baserunner. A sac fly sent Gilkey home for another Lazer run.

Devin Plourde came to the mound in the 5th, grabbing two flyouts. Anderson Roden quickly followed to get reps in on the mound and ending the inning with a popout. Dante Santos beat out the throw to get on base in the bottom of the 5th. A Sawanec double scored one, followed by a run scored on a passed ball. Sawanec made his way around the bases on a sac fly to score and relieve the Lazers of being 10-run ruled in the 5th. Jeff Ralabate knocked in another run on a deep triple and bringing in a new Cayuga pitcher. The Lazers cut Cayuga's lead to 14-6 after the 4-run inning.

A sac fly and 2-run homerun in the top of the 6th put Cayuga up 17-6. The Lazers went scoreless in the bottom of the inning, ending the game in 6 innings. Anthony Sawanec went 2-3 in game 2 with an RBI.

Onondaga travels to Rochester today, March 20th to go head to head with the Monroe Tribunes at their place.
