Syracuse, NY - Baseball hosted Mohawk Valley Community College on Saturday in the 2025 home opener after opening up with division II Lackawanna College and the MSAC opponent, Jefferson Community College on the road. The Lazers entered Saturday's game with a 2-2 record after a sweep in Watertown over the Cannoneers.
Matt Krul started on the bump for the Lazers in game 1 taking care of business in the 1st striking out three batters. The Hawks left one runner on who reached 2nd base due to an error.
The Lazers were three up, three down with a fly out and two ground outs in the bottom of the 1st.
Krul shut out the Hawks striking out the first two batters in the 2nd inning. The Lazer defense backed him up with a fly out for out number three.
Carlos Jara led off with a liner double to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch field putting him in scoring position with no outs. A walk put Nick Perotta on giving the Hawks a first and third situation with 1 out, going with a pitching change. The new Hawks pitcher grabbed a strikeout and groundout leaving two runners on in scoring position and still a scoreless game headed into the bottom of the 2nd.
A walk to start the 3rd inning and a base hit put Hawks runners on the corners. A failed sac bunt attempt resulted in a pop out, holding both runners on 2nd and third and giving the Lazers 2 outs. Krul struck out the final Hawks batter leaving runners on first and third.
Joe Adamo led off the 3rd with a base hit single to right field. Adamo stole second before a strikeout and advanced to third on a groundout. Another ground out left another runner on third and still scoreless headed into the 4th inning.
The Hawks led off with base hit single in the 4th. The Hawks runner on first tried to steal on drop third strike, thrown out by Catcher
Luis Suarez. Krul finished inning with another strikeout.
Carter King hit a bomb in the 4th into deep right field for a triple. Perotta put a ball in play reaching on a fielders choice and scoring King on a throwing error by the second baseman for the Lazers first run.Â
Krul added three strikeouts to his total in the 5th inning, but put one runner on a drop third strike. The Hawks scored their first run ona. base hit through the 5-6 hole tying it up.
Luis Suarez recorded a base hit single in the bottom of the 5th with two outs that led to a
Ryan Campbell double to score Suarez.
Carlos Jara to the plate scored another Lazer run with two outs on a single to center field.Â
A Hawks base hit single to start the 6th led to runners in scoring position on a miss judged fly ball. Krul grabbed a big strikeout to get two outs for the Lazers with the tying run on second before a passed ball scored both runners, tying it up 3-3. A walk and another passed ball puts the Hawks go ahead run in scoring position. An error allowed the Hawks to take the lead, scoring all three runs with two outs before Krul struck out the final batter of the inning. A new Hawks pitcher started the bottom of the 6th inning, shutting out the Lazers with one base hit for
Colin White, but no runs scored.
Ryan Campbell started the top of the 7th on the mound. A walk, single, and intentional walk loaded up the bases leading to a 2-run single to put the Hawks up 6-3. Campbell struck out the final batter of the inning sending the Lazers into the bottom of the 7th trailing 6-3. The Lazers took the loss in game one with two ground outs and a strikeout in the bottom of the 7th.
Krul had 14 strikeouts in game 1.
Carlos Jara led the Lazers on offense going 2-3 with an RBI.
Jesse DeMaintenon started on the mound in game 2.
Jeff Ralabate started off the inning with a diving catch in left field. Two DeMaintenon strikeouts ended the inning for the Hawks with a runner left on.
Mike Ferranti started off the inning with a base hit up the middle followed by a single from Suarez advancing Ferranti to third. A fly ball to the right center gap from
Ryan Campbell scored Ferranti for the Lazers' first run followed by
Carlos Jara with a single to score another run for the Lazers to lead 2-0 headed into the 2nd inning with 4 hits.
A couple diving catches from
Carlos Jara and
Noah Umstead ended the top of the 2nd inning quick for the Hawks to get to Ralabate to lead off the bottom of the inning to leg out a triple.
Joe Adamo took the RBI grounding out to first putting the Lazers up 3-0. Ferranti was left on third after a triple to end the inning.Â
A quick 1-2-3 ended the top of the 3rd for the Hawks.
Dante Santos knocked in
Carlos Jara after a walk on a base hit single for the Lazers' 4th run and bringing in a new Hawks pitcher in the bottom of the 3rd. A
Kevin Stewart sac bunt resulted in a Hawks error which scored another run for the Lazers followed by a
Jeff Ralabate sac bunt that successfully scored Stewart for a 6-run lead.
Three base hits led to the Hawks' first run in the top of the 4th. The Lazers left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 4th after two walks and a single, still leading 6-1 headed into the 5th.
Three strikeouts for DeMaintenon left a Hawks' runner on base in the top of the 5th.
Brayden Delaney knocked in a run in the bottom of the 5th on a deep fly ball for a triple and bringing in a new Hawks pitcher.
Mike Ferranti grounded out to first for an RBI to put the Lazers up 8-1 headed into the 6th.
A walk and a single put runners on first and second for the Hawks with 1 out. DeMaintenon grabbed a strikeout and fly out ending the top of the 6th without any damage done. A quick 1-2-3 for the Lazers at the bottom of the inning sent them into the top of the 7th just three outs away from a victory.
Patrick Stafford came in to close for Onondaga on the mound in the tof the 7th. Stafford did his job striking out three Hawks batters and securing the victory.
Carlos Jara and
Mike Ferranti both went 2-3 from the plate in game 2.
The Lazers have a busy week starting with hosting the Monroe Tribunes on Tuesday, March 18th at 1pm.
