Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Continues Hot Start in SRC Arena

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga Men's Basketball hosted Region 15 Kingsborough Community College and Division II Lackawanna College on the floor of the SRC Arena & Events Center in this weekend's Lazer Tip-Off Classic.

Onondaga took on the Wave of Kingsborough in game four on Saturday at 7pm.

The Lazers' season high 97 point performance started with a quick five on the board on a three-point play from Syracuse local, Garang Garang and a steal and bucket from Brooklyn Freshman, Malachi Wilson. Another quick steal and bucket from Garang put the Lazers up 7-0. The Wave remained scoreless until their first points came from the freethrow line three and a half minutes in. Their first field goal came at 15:09 and another wouldn't follow until 7:55 remained in the first half, scoring 70% of their first points from the freethrow line. Meanwhile the first fifteen points for the Lazers came from Garang and Wilson. The Lazers put new faces on the floor with Rochester Freshman, Terry Griffin Jr. seeing his first minutes for the Lazers.

A quick spurt for the Wave with back to back threes cut it to nine, but the spurt was short lived, with the Lazers in the double bonus early on and making their freethrows. OCC extended their lead at the half to 48-25 after a three for Wilson, a steal and bucket from Oswego Freshman, Noah Bwalya, and a deep three in the last possession from the Freshman from Jamesville-Dewitt High School, Nate Johnson. The Lazers were led by Wilson with thirteen in the first half alongside Bwalya with eleven.

OCC didn't turn it off in the second half coming out immediately with deep back to back threes from Richmond, VA Sophomore, Shombe Jackson and a steal and bucket from Garang for a 61-27 lead. Jackson shut down the excitement of a Kingsborough three point play by hitting his third three in two and a half minutes, forcing a Wave timeout with a 64-29 lead. Rochester Freshman, Percy Robinson went off mid way through the half, sparking a 40-point lead for the Lazers with just under fifteen to go. Utilizing the depth of the Lazer roster, Marcellus Freshman, Jacob Meyer saw his first minutes for the Lazers with ten to go. OCC remained out of reach of the Wave, taking a 97-63 victory. Malachi Wilson led the way putting up 18 points and 11 assists for the Lazers. Percy Robinson added 12.

The Lazers closed out the Classic at 5pm on Sunday in game four with the Lackawanna Falcons, both hitting the floor 1-0 on the weekend. Malachi Wilson led the Lazers with a career high 21 points. Shombe Jackson put up 12 with 9 from beyond the arc.

OCC continued the grittiness shown in their season thus far after a three from Jackson revived the Lazers after a Falcons three-point play gave them a short lived 10-point lead. Wilson took it a step further with a bucket to cut it to 5 with just under five minutes in the half. Jackson capitalized on a Lackawanna turnover draining another three making it 28-32 with a minute remaining. The got a stop in the final possession, trailing just 6 entering the break.

The Lazers went to work in the second half, taking their first lead over the Falcons since the first five minutes of play on a bucket from Brian Whitley on the dish from Wilson with just under fifteen minutes. Garang extended the lead with a three-point play putting the Lazers up 39-34. OCC was in the bonus with just under five to go, but the 66.7% from the line played a factor in keeping it tight.

A Lazer basket to take a 5-point lead with under two minutes was called off due to offensive interference, allowing a Lackawanna three to regain the lead. A sequence of timeouts and trips to the freethrow line put the Lazers down 64-61 with 21.5 left on the clock. An OCC turnover led to another trip to the line for the Falcons for one-and-one. The Lazers regained possession on the first missed freethrow still trailing three. With no good looks from three, the Lazers fell just short to the Division II Falcons with a 64-61 final, moving to 3-1 on the season.

The men are back at MSAC play this Wednesday in Allyn Hall taking on the Panthers of Tompkins-Cortland Community College at 7:30pm.
