Syracuse, NY - Women's Basketball hosted the Region III matchup with the Hudson Valley Vikings over the Weekend in Allyn Hall. Onondaga came out with the victory over the formerly 10-5 Vikings after a competitive 40 minutes of play.
Brianna Weaver riled up the crowd hitting a three in Onondaga's first possession of the game. Hudson Valley put one in from the arc at the buzzer to end the first quarter to put them on top, 20-17. OCC responded with a 6-0 run the start the second. Aside from the Vikings tying it up 31-31, the Lazers never trailed in the second quarter. With outside shots not falling, the Lazers were forced to drive and outscored the Vikings 21-13 in the second. A
Kathryn Grainger 3-point play and a rebound and put back from
Mary Hamer ended the half with the Lazers up 38-33.
OCC kept and extended their lead in the third. The Vikings cut it to 6 points with 3:30 remaining in the third, but Grainger responded with an immediate three to keep the Lazers out of reach. They continued to pull away at the end of the quarter taking 14-point lead.
Precious Gabriel and
Amiya Johnson each fouled out with under three minutes remaining, but OCC secured their 15-point largest lead of the game and walked off the court victorious, 94-79.
OCC was led by
Sarah Hirschler with 19 points who went 9-12 from the freethrow line.
Brianna Weaver had 17 points and went 3-9 from three. Kate Grainger put up 16.
