Corning, NY - Onondaga traveled to Corning Community College on Wednesday for a double header against the No. 1 seeded Corning Red Barons for their final regular season contest of the season. The Red Barons entered the day with a 23-0 regional record.
Onondaga had first ups as the visiting team in game 1 of the day. The Lazers came out hot and hungry putting up two runs on Corning in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from
Carley Cinquemani and capitalized on an error on the Corning 2nd baseman. The Lazers defended in game 1 with Sophomore
Trista DeLong on the mound. DeLong held the Red Barons scoreless in the first two innings. The Lazers were eager for more runs putting up three in the 3rd with a 2-run double from
Kendall Cuyler and a sacrifice fly from DeLong to score Cuyler. The Lazers lead 5-0. Corning found their first unearned run after two Lazer errors to get on the board. With Onondaga unable to produce runs in the 4th and 5th, Corning clawed back after the Lazers handed them more runs due to errors. The Lazers led 5-4 in the top of the 6th with a chance to score some insurance runs. With two quick outs in the 6th,
Avree Salce reached first base after being hit by a pitch and
Zoe White followed after a Corning error.
Bianca DeSellems earned Onondaga a run with a base-hit single. DeLong came out to defend with purpose with a strikeout and two ground balls to hold the Red Barons scoreless in the 6th to lead 6-4 entering the 7th and their last chance to find some insurance runs.
Carley Cinquemani led off to draw a walk. After two pop-ups, DeLong remained on first base with two outs.
Olivia Colgan found a hole to advance DeLong to third and in scoring position.
Jenna Mills added an RBI with a base-hit single through the 5-6 hole to score DeLong for Onondaga's final run. The Lazers lead 7-4 with Corning's last at-bats to go. With 3 consecutive base-hits, Corning manufactured two runs and the tying run on second base with no outs. DeLong put the winning run on first base due to a walk. At a sacrifice bunt attempt from Corning,
Kendall Cuyler threw out the lead runner at third for the first Lazer out. DeLong caused a pop up for an infield fly for the second Lazer out. Loading up the bases after another walk and the tying runner on third, DeLong won the battle causing a ground out to
Carley Cinquemani for the final out of the game and Onondaga defeating Corning 7-6. DeLong secured the win on the mound with six strikeouts and just three earned runs for the Red Barons. The Lazers hammered nine base-hits and
Kendall Cuyler led with two RBIs in the victory.
Unsatisfied with one and hungry for another, Onondaga took the field in game 2Â as the home team with
Bianca DeSellems on the mound to start. Both teams scoreless in the 1st, Corning was first on the board scoring a run in the 2nd on a sacrifice fly. The Lazers were unable to find their groove until the 4th inning trailing 0-7 for their fourth at bats after ending the inning on a pick off from catcher,
Avree Salce and returning to DeLong on the mound looking for her second win.
Bianca DeSellems started the rally with a double followed by a Cinquemani single and another base clearing double from
Kendall Cuyler. The Lazers batted around the lineup to get to DeSellems again with bases loaded after having scraped back to trail just 5-7 with 1 out. DeSellems fouled off the first pitch and straighted out the next one for a grand slam and earned Onondaga a 9-7 lead on the Red Barons and a 9-run 4th inning. But Corning closed the margin in the 5th scoring 2 but quickly taken back by the Lazers after a solo homerun from
Jenna Mills. Lazers lead 10-9. DeLong wasn't done, shutting Corning out in the 6th after a strikeout with the tying run on third. The Lazers put runners on in their next at-bats and scored two on a sacrifice fly from
Olivia Colgan and an RBI single from
Jenna Mills to lead 12-9 and just having to hold the Red Barons in the top of the 7th for a sweep.
Kendall Cuyler secured the first out snagging a line drive at third base. After an error and a walk, DeLong caused a ground out to shortstop,
Emma Kelly for out number two still leading 12-9. With runners on first and second, DeLong gave up an RBI-double but still leading the Red Barons by two. Finding a hole, Corning then hit a 2-run single to tie it all up in the 7th. Pitching in her 11th inning of the day, DeLong gave up a homerun with the runner on first giving Corning a 12-14 lead. With Onondaga as the home team, they had the final say with their last at-bats to go.
Zoe White reached first base on a hit single trying to reclaim the lead, but Onondaga fell just short unable to score in the 7th falling 12-14 to the Red Barons.
Onondaga earned MSAC runner-ups in the regular season. They will enter regional play as the No. 7 seed. They will travel to Sanborn, NY this Saturday to face the No. 2 Niagara Thunderwolves at 1pm for a best of three-game series to earn a spot in the regional championship game for a chance to make the 2023 National Tournament.
