Softball Grabs Two Home Wins

Syracuse, NY - The Softball team hosted Niagara County and Erie Community Colleges this weekend for two regional matchups.

Saturday kicked off at 1pm against the Niagara Thunderwolves with Trista DeLong on the mound. DeLong went head to head with Niagara pitcher Leah Bailey each with a scoreless first inning and each giving up a run in the second. The OCC run was scored by DeLong on a Carley Cinquemani RBI. While Niagara's offense continued to produce runs, Onondaga struggled to put runners on base. A double from Bianca DeSellems in the 4th put her in position to score off an RBI from DeLong for the Lazer's second and final run of the game. Regardless of DeLong's nine strikeouts, Lazer errors allowed Niagara baserunners to score for a 2-7 final.

DeSellems took over the mound in game 2. After two runs each in the first inning, the Lazers took a 3-2 lead in the second due to an RBI from Sophia D'Arcangelis scoring Olivia Colgan after legging out a triple. Holding this lead until fifth, Onondaga gave up four runs after three base hits and an error. After giving up two more runs in the sixth, the Lazers trailed 8-3 in the top of the 7th with D'Arcangelis leading off. Three consecutive base hits from the Lazers and a walk resulted in two runs for OCC. Olivia Colgan found herself at the plate as the tying run with two outs and runners on second and third. With a 2-1 count, lighting struck on the hill for what would be a 35 minute rain delay. Returning to the field for what would be the final batter, Colgan struck out for the final out of the game for the Lazers to drop game 2 for a 8-5 final against the Thunderwolves. DeSellems took the loss on the mound and lead with three base hits and two RBIs.

Onondaga returned Sunday morning ready to play the Erie Kats. DeLong returned to the mound to start day 2. The Kats put up the first run of the game and the Lazers responded with two of their own in the second on RBIs from Emma Kelly and Sophia D'Arcangelis. Erie tied it up 2-2 in the third off two base hits. Adjusting to the Erie pitcher, Onondaga found consistent base hits producing 12 runs in the third inning for a 14-2 lead. Scoring three more and shutting down the Erie offense, Onondaga took game 1 in five innings with a 17-2 victory. Avree Salce went 3-3 from the plate.

The Lazers wasted no time in game 2 scoring six runs in the first inning with a 2-run homerun from OIivia Colgan. Colgan pitched game 2 holding the Kats to three runs. Onondaga continued to hit finishing in five innings with a final score of 16-3. Jenna Mills, Kendall Cuyler, and Olivia Colgan led with three RBIs each.

The Lazers will travel to Monroe Community College tomorrow, April 26th for a 3pm double-header against the Tribunes.
