Syracuse, NY - Women's Basketball kicked off their season hosting the Lazer Tip-Off Classic against the Community College of Rhode Island and Rowan College of Gloucester County. The Lazers played Friday and Sunday and went 2-0 for a strong start to the season defeating the No. 7 and No. 15 teams in the country.
The women kicked off at 8pm on Friday night following the men in Allyn Hall with fans excited for the start of basketball season. The Lazers last saw the Knights in March at the 2022-23 National Tournament in Rochester, MN where they took a 72-64 loss in the first round.
Despite a slow start for Onondaga, they used the depth of their 20-women roster to run on the Knights playing a fast game and scoring the majority of their buckets in transition. They took a lead over the Knights in the second quarter that they would seize to give back and take a 73-62 victory. Freshman,
Sarah Hirschler, led the Lazers in the victory against the Knights with 15 points and 5 rebounds.
With a day off in between, the Lazers took on the Rowan Gloucester Roadrunners Sunday afternoon whom they last saw at the 2021-22 National Tournament. The Lazers continued to utilize their transition game to score on the Roadrunners. Sophomore Guard,
Avianna Baker had 20 points and 6 assists in the 82-57 victory.
At 2-0, the women will begin regional play this week with a Tuesday night matchup against the Monroe Tribunes in Allyn Hall at 5:30pm.
