Syracuse, NY - Women's Basketball hosted Jefferson Community College on Saturday and Monroe College out of the Bronx, NY on Sunday. Onondaga moves to 6-1 overall after the weekend's contests.
The 4-0 Cannoneers gave the Lazers the fight they have yet to see on the court this season. With numerous lead changes throughout the contest, the Lazers came out on top after a high intensity fourth quarter that included a technical foul called on Onondaga's
Precious Gabriel giving Jefferson a chance to take a 1 point lead with 2 shots at the line, but missed both. Both teams struggled from the line late in the game. With two back-to-back stops and buckets from Gabriel and
Cianna Papineau, the Lazers had edge in the final few minutes over the Cannoneers earning a 78-70 win. Papineau led with 14 points and 7 steals.
Back on the court on Sunday, the Lazers took on the Division I Monroe College Mustangs at 2pm. The Lazers, coming off of Saturday's performance went neck-and-neck with the Mustangs playing great defense and back-to-back charges taken by
Sarah Sovocool. Papineau's quick hands earned her 4 steals and making the Mustangs work to penetrate this Lazer defense. With outside shots starting to fall and a few Lazer turnovers gave Monroe the edge at the end of the first quarter with a 25-29 lead. Carrying this momentum into the second quarter, back-to-back Mustang three's and Onondaga struggling to convert gave Monroe their largest lead of the game before the half.
Kathryn Grainger caused a spark under the Lazers in the third quarter finding the hoop and coming back from the 13-point deficit. But the early lead gave Monroe the 87-64 win after a well fought 40 minutes of play. Papineau led again with 14 points and 4 steals.
The Lazers are back at it on Tuesday, November 28th at 5pm at Genesee Community College looking to advance their conference record to 4-0.
