Lazers Extend Record to 19-8 With a Pair of Wins at Home

Syracuse, NY- The Lazers took on the SUNY Broome Community College Hornets in a seven-inning doubleheader matchup at the Onondaga Community College Baseball Complex Tuesday afternoon. The Lazers' defense stayed strong, and their offense was explosive to help them win both games and extend their overall record to 19-8.

In game one, sophomore starting pitcher, Seth Zurbruegg, led the Lazers on the mound, pitching a complete game and facing 27 batters. Zurbruegg walked two batters, struck out a career-high 14 batters, and gave up three hits for one run to extend his record to 3-0 on the mound. The Lazers were led offensively by sophomore right fielder Jake Humes. Humes had two hits and two RBIs in three at-bats. Freshman second baseman, Kolby Gidcumb, added a pair of doubles and one run in three at-bats, while freshman shortstop, John "Jack" Scanlon, added two hits, a walk, a stolen base, and a run in two at-bats. The Lazers would win game one, 3-1, on seven hits and three errors.

The Hornets came out strong in the top of the first inning in game two, scoring five runs. That didn't stop the Lazers from scoring three of their own and erupting for seven more runs in the second and third inning to take a 10-5 lead going into the fourth inning. The Lazers then extended their lead in the sixth inning, scoring three runs, and shut down the Hornets in the seventh to win 13-6 on 12 hits and an error. Freshman pitcher, Nick Haviland, entered the game in the fifth inning to pitch the final three innings facing 14 batters and shutting down the Hornets to earn his second win of the season on the mound. Haviland walked two batters, struck out seven, and gave up three hits for no runs. Sophomore designated hitter, Kolby Gidcumb, led the Lazers offensively with a pair of doubles, three runs, and three RBIs in four at-bats. Freshman second baseman, Kyle Wood, added a triple, a single, a walk, two runs, and two RBIs in three at-bats while sophomore third baseman, Garrett Stuckey, added a hit and a walk for three RBIs in two at-bats.
