Box Score It was a game that was befitting of the top two teams in the Mid State Athletic Conference – exciting, momentum-changing, and hard-fought until the end.
After being down by 7 points at halftime and by as many as 15 points by the middle of the third period on the road on Saturday at Finger Lakes Community College, the Onondaga Community College women's basketball team fought back to eventually take the lead midway through the final period only to find themselves down by 3 with 4.2 seconds remaining in regulation play. The Lazers advanced the ball past midcourt to
Michaela Whiteman (G. Ray Bodley – Fulton) who proceeded to knockdown a 30 foot 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. Unfortunately for the Lazers, the late game momentum didn't carry into to the 5 minute overtime as they were beaten by Finger Lakes 85-80. With the loss Onondaga falls to 9-2 in the conference (21-6 overall) while Finger Lakes goes to 10-1 in conference play and 19-3 overall. This marks the first time in the past 12 seasons that Onondaga has not been the MSAC regular season champion.
Payton Noeller (Cato – Meridian) had the best offensive game of her freshman year in leading the Lazers in scoring with 20 points that including 6 makes from beyond the 3-point line. Samantha Britton (Kenmore West – Buffalo) had 18 points while Whiteman chipped in with 17.
Rachel Scalisi (Fabius – Pompey) corralled 15 rebounds while dishing out 6 assists, and
Karleigh Wucher (Onondaga Central) came off the bench to collect 11 rebounds.
Onondaga will return home to Allyn Hall for a final regular season conference game at 5pm on Tuesday, February 20 against Cayuga Community College. The team's sophomores will be recognized for their accomplishments prior to tip-off.
