Lazers Overcome Slow Start

The Onondaga women's basketball team defeats Fulton Montgomery 59-55, on Saturday. With the win, Onondaga moves to 4 – 1 overall and 2 - 0 in Regional Play.

The Lazers got off to a slow start on Saturday as they struggled to find their offensive rhythm. As the Lazers missed easy layups and turned the ball over, they found themselves down 16-9 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lazers found their stride scoring 16 points. The Lazers got great minutes off the bench from Karleigh Wucher who scored 6 points in the second quarter to lead the Lazers. While Sydni Eure chipped in 4 points. The Lazers continued to play their style of basketball pushing the pace of the game when they saw fit. The Lazers ran their offensive sets well while getting great looks at the basket. After winning the second quarter the Lazer entered halftime trailing the Raiders 25-28.

Entering the third quarter, Onondaga continued to chip away at the lead. Sticking to their game plan, the Lazers were able to tally 17 third quarter points. The team's leading scorer, Sydni Eure got going scoring 6 points for the Lazers. Sophomore captain, Danielle Yates added 4 points in the third. The Lazers defense forced FMCC into tough shooting situation but they were about to covert. After a back and forth third quarter, Fulton Montgomery held onto a 43-42 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Lazers were able to show their depth in the fourth quarter as six different players recorded points. The Raiders got on the board first to extend their lead to 45-42 with 9:15 on the clock. The Lazers then went on an 8-0 run. Amber Meigs started the scoring at with a layup at the 8:24 mark. Seconds later Holly Sleeth came up with a steal assisting Shaylin Heidl for the fast break layup. Eure followed up with back-to-back baskets to take the lead 50-45. Onondagas 2-3 zone continued to give FMCC issues forcing turnovers and errant passes. Leading 52-48 the Lazers turn a jump ball into a change of possession in their favor. A Wucher layup extended the Lazers lead 54-48 with 4:26 left in the game. After trailing by six FMCC went to a full court press causing back-to-back turnover for the Lazers. The Lazers once again showed great defensive effort forcing Fulton Montgomery to shoot low percentage shots. With 3:20 on the clock Meigs come of a highball screen to hit a three pointer, extending Onondaga's lead to 57-48. FMCC once again pick up their full court pressure. This time the pressure lead to easy baskets for the Raiders. A 7-0 run by the Raiders cut the Lazers lead to 57-55. Eure's final basket with 30 seconds left extended the Lazers lead to 59-55 and sealed the victory.  

Sydni Eure finished the game one rebound shy of a double double, scoring 16 points and recording 9 rebounds. Sophomore forward Karleigh Wucher added 8 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.

The Lazers remain at home, as they host Niagara at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14 for more Regional action.
