Box Score Onondaga Women's Basketball defeated Jefferson Community College, 63-45, on Tuesday night in the Sub-Regionals. Onondaga will advance to the NJCAA Region III Final Four this weekend.
It was a special night for Head Coach
Mike Wheeler, as his team earned him his 400th career victory at OCC. In just sixteen years at the helm of the program, Coach Wheeler has amassed a record of 400-105. He has led the program to eight straight Mid-State Athletic Conference Tournament titles, four NJCAA Regional Championships, three NJCAA National Semi-final appearances, and was the National Championship Runner-up in 2010.
OCC held Jefferson scoreless through the first seven minutes of the game to jump out to a, 7-0, lead but the Cannoneers fought back to get within three points at the end of the first quarter.
To start the second, Jefferson hit back-to-back threes to tie the game, but the Lazers refused to give up the lead on their own hardwood. With four minutes left in the first half, OCC held a narrow five point advantage, when the Lazers defense went to work, forcing 3 turnovers and scoring 12 unanswered to enter the half up, 33-17.
Sam Britton was on fire to start the third quarter, the freshman forward scored four straight to extend the Lazers lead to 23. Britton led the way as her team maintained consistency in the backstretch to ensure the playoff victory.
Sam Britton matched her career-high with 31 points and collected 11 rebounds.
Morgan Deland followed with 16 points and 11 boards, and
Jordan Vaught dished out 7 assists.
Onondaga (26-5) will travel to the NJCAA Region III host, Mohawk Valley this weekend for the NJCAA Region III Final Four. The Lazers will face Finger Lakes Community College (21-8) on Saturday at 3pm in Utica, NY.
