Syracuse, N.Y. – Second-ranked Onondaga Community College's seven-year title run was snapped when fourth-ranked Genesee Community College's Pat Van Bortle worked his way around the back of the net to move free and score the game winning goal for a 13-12 sudden-death overtime victory Sunday afternoon in the NJCAA National Championship giving the Cougars their first ever men's lacrosse national title.
The Lazers started the scoring early when Cam Horn scored his 32nd goal of the season off a feed from Thomas McNaney at the 12:23 mark. Genesee would score the game's next two goals to take a 2-1 lead. Pat Van Bortle netted his 66th goal of the season with help from Alex Henry and then Jacob Bomberry added his 58th goal of the season with an assist from Kyle Dalrymple at the 11:16 mark in the first quarter. The Lazers closed out the scoring in the first quarter with four goals to take 5-2 lead. Kyle Killen scored his 45th and 46th goals at the 8:00 and 6:06 minute mark with assists from Teiowison'tion (Brine) Rice and Larson Sundown. After a nice save from Lazers goalie Holden McDonald, Cam Horn would add his first of three goals on the afternoon with 4:24 left to play in the opening quarter off a feed from Matthew Bennett. The final goal of the quarter came from Bennett, his 21st of the season, as he scooped up his own rebound and tossed it in with 45 seconds left on the clock.
Onondaga would open the scoring in the second quarter at the 10:19 mark as Killen lined a shot in the upper corner for his third goal of the game. After a proceeding face-off win by Samuel Watts, Horn would appear to score his third goal of the season to give Onondaga a 7-2 lead. However, an illegal stick waived the goal off and allowed Genesee to grab momentum for three straight goals to pull within one. A man up goal Van Bortle at 9:14 followed by a tally from David Prince at 6:24 made the score 6-4. Just over a minute later at the 5:07 mark, Jonah Mohawk netted his 15th goal of the season to pull the Cougars within one at 6-5. Onondaga would widen the gap as Killen found a cutting LeRoy Halftown down the middle with 2:31 left to play in the half. Killen would follow to give Onondaga an 8-5 halftime lead as he snipped a shot from 25 yards out with 5 seconds left, his fourth of the game.
Genesee opened the second half scoring with a man up goal at 7:43 from Sherman Williams to make it 8-6. Just under a minute later (6:55) Thomas McNaney registered his first goal of the game with help from Killen to make it 9-6 in favor of the Lazers. Genesee would again cut the lead to one with back-to-back goals coming from Williams (5:18) and Bomberry (2:46). With 54 seconds left in the third, Horn would score his 34th of the season with an assists from Sundown to give Onondaga a 10-8 lead with one quarter left to play.
Genesee would go on a three goal run to open the fourth quarter to take a 11-10 lead with 10:40 left to play. Bomberry booked a goal at 13:38 and then Williams would add his third and fourth goals of the game at the 11:24 and 10:40 mark. Onondaga would come right back to regain the lead with goals from McNaney and Killen. With 10:02 to play, Sundown found McNaney on the crease for his 32nd goal on the year. After each goalie recorded back-to-back noteworthy saves, Killen would score his fifth goal of the game, and 49th of the season, with 6:08 left on the clock from Sundown to give the Lazers a 12-11 lead. Genesee would tie the game at 12 when Van Bortle registered his 68th goal of the season, third of the game, off a fast-break attack with 3:43 left to play. Each team failed to score in the final minutes sending the game into overtime.
Both teams traded possessions to open overtime before Van Bortle notched the game winner with 1:14 on the clock to give the Cougars their first ever national championship.
Goalie Holden McDonald turned away 17 of Genesee's 30 shots on goal.
Kyle Killen, Thomas McNaney and Holden McDonald each landed a spot on the All-Tournament team. Â
The Lazers finish the season 13-2.
