Syracuse, NY – Freshman first baseman Justin Germain collected two doubles and three RBI to lead the Onondaga Community College baseball team to a 10-5 win over Mercyhurst North East on Tuesday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at the Baseball Complex. The Saints picked up a 7-4 win in eight innings to take game one.
Game One: Mercyhurst North East 7, Onondaga 4
The Lazers opened up the scoring in the bottom half of the first inning with one run on two hits. The bases became loaded after a one out walk issued to sophomore second baseman Avery Brooks, a single to right field from sophomore catcher Paul Fitzgibbons and a walk to sophomore third baseman Nate Budge. Germain followed by lining a single to right field scoring Brooks to give Onondaga a 1-0 lead.
Mercyhurst North East scored three runs in the top half of the fourth inning and added one more in the sixth. After back-to-back singles by Jesse Staudt and Drew Delsignore to open the fourth, cleanup hitter Scott Pierce launched a three-run homer to left center giving the Saints a 3-1 edge. In the sixth, Mercuhurst North East added to their lead scoring on a double steal.
The Lazers fought back in the bottom of the seventh with three runs on just one hit. With one out, Fitzgibbons, Budge and Germain worked three consecutive walks to load the bases. Freshman center fielder Terry Daniels then lined a two-run double to left center scoring Fitzgibbons and Budge. Pinch-hitter Austin Hall then lifted a fly ball to left field to plate pinch-runner Myles Carter tying the score at four apiece.
In extra innings, the Saints scored three runs on a double off the bat of Michael Montalbano to retake the lead for good at 7-4.
Sophomore righty Nick Claver (2-0) started on the mound for the Lazers going seven innings giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out eight. Freshman righty Colin Smith (0-1) took the loss for Onondaga. Â
The Lazers left 11 runners on base in game one. Fitzgibbons, Budge, Germain and Daniels recorded Onondaga's four hits. Â Â Â Â Â
Game Two: Onondaga 10, Mercyhurst North East 5
In the nightcap, the Lazers put up crooked numbers in every offensive inning thanks to nine extra-base hits.
In the first inning, after a Fitzgibbons single and a Budge walk, Germain lifted a two-out double to right center clearing the bases.
In the second inning, Hall singled to the right side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman left fielder Chad Raychel followed by roping a single to left field scoring Hall.
In the third inning, Budge led off with a double to left field and then came around to score on a double off the bat of Germain.
In the fourth inning, Hall led off with a double down the left field line and then came around to score on a double from sophomore right fielder John Larca.
The Lazers then put up three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. After a pair of walks to Budge and Daniels, freshman designated hitter Autie Ascenzi cleared the bases with a double down the left field line. Hall then followed with a double of his own to score pinch-runner Myles Carter.
Onondaga closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs. The big hit came from Germain who doubled to score Fitzgibbons and Budge.
Freshman righty Aaron Beck improved to (3-0) going five innings giving up two earned runs on three hits while recording seven strikeouts. Freshmen pitchers Danny Valerio and Kyle Naugle shut the door on the Saints to help the Lazers improve to 8-1 on the season.
Onondaga (8-1) returns to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader against Northampton Community College at the Baseball Complex starting at 1 p.m.Â
