The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's lacrosse team had its nine-game winning streak and unbeaten record snapped as the Lazers fell to top-ranked Monroe Community College 19-12 on Saturday at David W. Murphy Field.
With the loss, Onondaga is now 9-1 in the season while the Tribunes remain unbeaten at 9-0.
The day began in remembrance of former Onondaga women's lacrosse team member,
Elizabeth Tully and her mother Victoria Tully, following their tragic passing last year. Elizabeth and Victoria were honored with an emotional pre-game ceremony in which Lazers' head coach Tom McDonald and the entire Onondaga team presented Elizabeth's father, David Tully, with Elizabeth's framed #2 jersey.
After the game got underway, the Lazers were the first to draw blood.
Cheyenne Burnam found
Jordan Osborne who fired home a shot just two minutes into the contest to give Onondaga the early 1-0 advantage.
Monroe would tie the game at one goal apiece at the 24:12 mark before the pace of play slowed down a bit as both teams went scoreless for the next 9:36 of the half.
Down 2-1 following a Tribunes score with 14:34 remaining, the Lazers evened the score nearly two minutes later after Burnam found
Makenzie Annable this time.
Onondaga struggled to find the back of the net in the tail-end of the half however as Monroe outscored the Lazers 6-1 in the last 12:03 of the period. This left Onondaga faced with an 8-3 deficit at intermission.
The Lazers came out of halftime firing on all cylinders as they managed to tally five quick goals within the first eight minutes of the new frame to draw even with the Tribunes at eight goals each. The offensive charge was led by Osborne who tallied two scores during the run.
The second half proved to be a half of runs as Monroe responded to Onondaga's five-goal run by taking an 11-8 lead at the 18:34 mark following a three-goal run of its own.
Just over a minute later, the Lazers responded with back-to-back scores from Annable and Osborne to draw within one goal of the Tribunes at 11-10 with just 16:01 left in the game.
That would be as close as Onondaga would come to Monroe for the rest of the contest however, as the Tribunes went on an eight-goal run in the span of 11:44 to take a 19-10 advantage. The Lazers would add two late goals from
Nicole DeVona and
Kristyn Drake before eventually falling 19-12.
Osborne led the Lazers in scoring in the game with four goals while Annable was close behind with three scores in addition to her two assists.
Other Onondaga contributors included
Megan Fero,
Alisia Griffin, and
Jaycie Annable who each tallied one score. Freshman
Cheyenne Burnam finished with two assists for the Lazers.
Sophia Wojnovich started in net for Onondaga and dropped her first game of the season, falling to 8-1.
The No. 2 Lazers will look to rebound at 7 p.m. next Wednesday as they head to Watertown to take on No. 3 Jefferson Community College
