On a day when the 11 sophomore's on the nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's lacrosse team were honored for their contributions to the program, the Lazers were able to defeat Broome 24-2 at David W. Murphy Field.
The Wednesday afternoon victory boosts Onondaga's winning streak to nine games as the Lazers sit at 9-0 on the season. Meanwhile, the Hornets fell to 0-6 on the year following the loss.
The sophomores were the ones to get Onondaga going offensively early on in the game as
Alisia Griffin opened up the scoring just 15 seconds into the game for her lone score of the contest. Just two minutes later,
Nicole DeVona found fellow sophomore
Makenzie Annable who put the Lazers up 2-0.
Over the next nine minutes of the first half Onondaga strung together eight more scores to build a 10-0 before Broome responded at the 18:17 mark with a player-advantage goal to make it a 10-1 deficit.
Onondaga's first half offensive pursuit was relentless however as
Jaycie Annable responded to the Broome score less than two minutes later with a goal of her own. The freshman's only tally of the contest would ignite the Lazers to outscore the Hornets 11-1 in the last 16:51 of the first half, giving Onondaga the 22-2 advantage at intermission.
The Lazers would go on to find the back of the net three more times in the second half before they walked away with the 24-2 victory.
Makenzie Annable and
Jordan Osborne had a memorable sophomore day as each player finished with five goals for Onondaga. The five scores marked a career-high for Osborne. Annable added an assist in the contest while Osborne finished with a game-high three helpers.
Freshman
Cheyenne Burnam also managed to match her elder teammates as she posted a career-high five goals in addition to her two assists.
DeVona and
Megan Fero recorded two goals on the day while
Julia Catalano and
Aleasha Fredenburg each added one goal apiece for the Lazers.
Between the pipes for Onondaga,
Sophia Wojnovich moved to 8-0 on the season while
Gretchen Krzykowski picked up 30 minutes of playing time as well.
The No. 2 Lazers will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as they battle top-ranked and unbeaten Monroe Community College at David W. Murphy Field.
