Baseball Scores Season-High 19 Runs - Splits with Jefferson

In its first Mid-State Athletic Conference action of the season, the Onondaga Community College baseball team split a pair of games with visiting Jefferson Community College on Tuesday as the Lazers defeated the Cannoneers 19-1 in the first game of the doubleheader before falling 4-3 in that second contest at the Onondaga Baseball Complex.

With the split, Onondaga moves to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in MSAC play while Jefferson is now 1-5 overall and 1-1 in conference contests.

Game One: Jefferson 1. Onondaga 19 (5 innings)

The Lazers took a 5-1 lead into the second inning when Avery Brooks hit a single to right field, driving home John Larca to give Onondaga a 6-1 advantage. The run scored was just the start to an inning where the Lazers would go on to put up eight runs in total, giving them the 13-1 edge heading into the third frame.

Onondaga wouldn't look back from there as pitcher Reynaldo Hernandez would prove to be too much for the Cannoneers to handle. In four innings, the freshman only allowed one hit while striking out six batters, leading to a 19-1 Lazers victory. The 19 runs scored marked the most Onondaga has scored in a game this season.

Onondaga had active bats throughout the entire line-up as seven different players finished with at least one hit. Brandon Kapcinski and Brooks each finished with three hits and four RBI on four at-bats while Ricky Ortiz and Dylan Nardocci each scored three runs.

As a team Onondaga stole eight bases in the game while Larca and Kapcinski managed to steal two bases apiece.

Alexander Way picked up the win for the Lazers after pitching one inning and allowing one hit. The freshman is now 1-1 on the season.

Game Two: Jefferson 4, Onondaga 3

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Onondaga would take the lead in the third inning after a two-run double from Brooks staked the Lazers a 2-1 lead before the fourth inning.

Jefferson would battle back however, driving home three runs in the top of the fourth inning to go up by a pair. Onondaga would respond in the fifth inning when Paul Fitzgibbons scored on a Justin Mathers ground-out to second base to cut the deficit to just one run.

Trailing by a single run, 4-3, in the bottom of the seventh, the Lazers would have had the game-tying run in scoring position when Fitzgibbons was thrown out trying to stretch a double to a triple, putting Onondaga one out away from defeat. Despite a single by Mathers, the Lazers would groundout to end the game.

On the mound, Nate Boughton had complete command of the strike zone, but suffered his second loss of the season after allowing four earned runs on four hits. The freshman posted a career-high 12 strike outs, the most by any Lazers' player this season.

Onondaga will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Thursday as it takes on Monroe Community College in a doubleheader at the Onondaga Baseball Complex.
