Northampton Community College's Juan Perez-Jones connected on a lean in three-pointer with 1.2 seconds to go to give the Spartans a 54-53 win over Onondaga and capture the 2015 Onondaga Classic Championship on Sunday afternoon. The title was the Spartans' first in three Classic appearances and raised their record to 2-1 on the season. The Lazers dropped to 1-1 on the season.
Onondaga came out fast on Sundayscoring the first 7 points of the contest, capped by a
Zachary Sawyer three-pointer. Northampton answered with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the contest, and it remained that way throughout. Onondaga was able to take a 30-27 lead into the halftime break, with offense hard to come by for both teams.
The Lazers were able to maintain the lead throughout the early going in the second half, and when
Nikeem Deleon scored at the 14:50 mark, the Lazer lead stood at 39-33. After a defensive stop the Lazers appeared to convert a three-poonter to open up a 9-point advantage, but the basket was waved off on an illegal screen call. Northampton them proceeded to hold the Lazers scoreledd for 5 minutes, and took the lead at 41-39 on a Perez-Jones basket with 9:53 to go. The Lazers briefly recaptured the advantage on a field goal and free throw by
Jordan Bandera, but that lead was short lived as the Spartans proceeded to score the next 8 points and carve out their biggest advantage at 49-42 with 5:27 to go.
Sawyer converted two free-throws to break the run, and field goals by Deleon and
Kameron DiSanto pulled the Lazers within one, 49-48, with 4:04 remaining. After Northampton's Justin Kusiuppough scored to put Northampton back up three, the Lazers held Northampton scoreless for the next 3:48, and when Deleon scored on a drive the Lazers had a 52-51 lead with 1:15 left. Onondaga then got two big defensive stops, but only converted 1 of 4 free throws in the final 32 seconds, opening up the door for Perez-Jones' heroics.
Perez-Jones was Northampton's only double figure scorer with 13 points. He was named the tournament Most Outstanding Player. Deleon scored 12 points to lead Onondaga and was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Sawyer, D'Montie Shaw of Northampton, Fredens Deneus of Bunker Hill Community College, and David Flores of Dutchess Community College. Bunker Hill defeated Dutchess, 95-68, in the Classic consolation game.
Onondaga returns to action on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm when they host SUNY Adirondack in the SRC Arena & Events Center.
